I can't remember anything about infantry throwing anything except arrows and bolts at each other from my history classes. Can you specify when and where was this so common?

Ok, I see they were used in ancient Rome. Were they used sometime a bit closer to warband era, having the "everyone had something to throw" statement in mind.
