It's true, Do people forget that it was probably one of the first well known games that included an advanced physics engine?

I remember people talking about the gravgun and how immersive and cool it was back then.

That was all I really cared about the game.  I thought the original was much more ground breaking than HL2.  Besides, HL2 spawned the Source games, which were terrible compared to the originals (TFC > TF2.  CS > CS:S. DOD > DOD:S).

I really could care less about HL3, and this is coming from someone who's owned a copy of HL since early 1999 (and has probably put 20,000+ hours into the mods)

This x1000. Also notice that all of those games (TF2, CSS, DODS) were originally developed by modders until bought out by Valve, which points to why the sequels/Source versions are vastly inferior (though I do prefer TF2 over TFC).

The appeal of HL1 to me was that it was very different from other FPS games, you actually had to solve puzzles and use your mind beyond running and gunning.  I loved the story line and how expansive they made Black Mesa feel, everything seemed well explained and it was (and still is) one of my favorite games.  It also introduced a large modding community that created games like Counter-Strike and Day of Defeat, both of which were quite huge at the time.

HL2 on the other hand, which came out nine fucking years ago, was awesome.  Obviously, looking back at it today you probably think less of it because it was essentially the ground work for future FPS games.  The story wasn't as great, I'll give you that, but look at what the modding community turned into.  Garrysmod alone is an excellent example of what an open modding community can do, and that is another reason why I love Valve.

I don't doubt that the release of HL3 and Source 2 will bring great things to the gaming world, just like HL1 and HL2 did.  We can't be sure what it'll be, but Valve always delivers.  Even if HL3 turns out to be a total garbage, generic piece of shit shooter, I wouldn't be surprised at all if something great came out of it's engine.

tl;dr

Valve delivers and mods are cool.

Lal. It was a hoax. The patent is no longer to be found.

http://www.valvetime.net/threads/fake-european-half-life-3-portal-3-trademarks-filed.243962/

Quote
Update 1:

We can now confirm that the "Half-Life 3" trademark has been removed from the Trademarks and Design Registration Office of the European Union (OHIM) website. The entrant appears to have disappeared entirely after only being listed on the website database for little over a week, allowing us to identify that the trademark's listing was more than likely a hoax intended to generate fake buzz for a game which is unlikely to appear for several years. Returning readers may remember when we had discussed how the "Half-Life 3" listing was previously never officially checked or authenticated before its removal.

On October 2nd 2013, a brand new trademark filing appeared on the same site, this time for "Portal 3", which is listed under the trademark number of "012190286". While this new filing should almost definitely be taken with a rather large pinch of salt, we can confirm that the "Portal 3" listing appears to have been appropriately examined by OHIM, unlike the previously listed "Half-Life 3" trademark. Thanks to the recent sneak peak into Valve's Jira account, we can confirm that there is currently no "Portal 3" development team within the company, highlighting that this brand new listing is also very likely a hoax of some kind, regardless of whether or not it has been officially examined. We'll keep you posted if and when we learn more.

Also, expect Battlefield 20:

A quick search of the US Patents and Trademark office shows that Valve already own such names for potential products in the future, including Dota 3, and of course Valve have regularly updated their ownership of the www.half-life3.com domain over the last few years. Please remember that the existence of a trademark such as this has very little to do with the development of any game title, as we imagine this kind of trademark is submitted simply to protect intellectual property, regardless of whether or not a company will ever use said trademark. A recent example of this comes directly from publisher Electronic Arts, who registered domain names for the Battlefield series as far ahead as Battlefield 20!
