In videogames in general, certain names for player characters are banned from use for being offensive, or just otherwise inappropriate. However, when in comes to historical names, the policies for banning a name for being inappropriate are often based on double standards. This is a sad phenomenon, that is especially true when involved with events such as World War II.
Today I was banned by an admin (Rico) for until year 2044 (intended it as a joke I suppose) for having named my character Commander of the Third Reich. Now, I don't support N-a-z-i-s-m (Im sorry for avoiding the word filter) anyway, and they did a lot terrible things that were completely wrong and shouldn't have been done. World War II ended nearly 70 years ago, and since then words like 'N-a-z-i' and 'H-i-t-l-e-r' have taken a meaning of 'something evil or unjust', and thus should be avoided from using in character naming. But why do we let the shadows of past to bring us down? Why should we? When it comes to things like Soviets or Stalin or even North-Korea, no one seems to care at all, but god help you if you make a N-a-z-i reference of any sort. Why the double standards? World War II happened and that's it, let's get over it. Until today I had received absolutely no complaints of my characters name and many people even thought it was a pretty clever one.
Historical events are what made the world for what it is today. Whether we like it or not they are part of us, one way or another. Why shouldn't we be allowed to use any names related to the Third Reich when any other names related to that period of time are considered okay?
Or is it still 'too soon'?
