If the desire is to drain gold from the players, especially those who already have a lot it would be much better (IMO) to offer some services players would pay for.
Services for gold (quick ideas from top of my head):
- Account bind a heirloom ~ so you can use it on all characters
- Betting of any sort
- Clan Banner ~ (In the future where all this stuff is planned) make it cost a 'clan tax' (or one time fee, like 50k/100k) to make/have a banner slot
- Clan Bank ~ X cost to buy one for your clan, plus perhaps a tax every month. Enables you to easier trade items/gold between clan mates. Perhaps X% gold earned in-game could go into the vault if chosen.
- Cosmetics ~ use the heirloom package for example, or add something such as having a banner (heraldic) attached to your armour medieval/samurai style
- Convert CRPG gold to Strategus gold for a (percentage) fee
- Government lottery
- Respec without XP loss ~ just make it really expensive and on a lengthy cooldown, the higher level the more expensive
- Transfer heirlooms from character to character, or from main to alt only
- Temporary XP earn boost () ~ Only works for alternative characters
- Unloom heirloom, cannot sell the points, very big cooldown ~ Requires some detailed thought on the potential impact though
Not saying all these should be implemented etc, just quick ideas that should be in the easy end to add, but anything that people would find useful is a potential idea.
What services would you all pay gold for? No suggestions that require adding items etc though, has to be something that's an easy change in terms of programming e.g. the parameters are already here.
