if I go to notes and check my character I can see my renown and next to renown there is "controversy" I know the meaning of the word but wtf is it in warband?
Well, controversy is basically how bad the other lords of the realm think about you.
It increases if:
- you are a marshall and your faction loses fights
- you have a duel with your faction's lord,
- you run with your wife away from her home without permission of her relatives
- you own too many fiefs (not sure about this one).
Controversy decreases the possibility of recieving a fief, think it's the only effect it has.

yeah ive had some frustrating moments too, like when I think im all cool and then some turd hero shows up with 1000 man elite army. quite fast I learned that you have to keep grind the other factions and keep them down, otherwise they will just massrecruit until they have an army big enough to take on you and your strongholds. frustrating cus it usally happens when you just gained some nice towns or fiefs and/or army :p but that's the game I guess. keeping the other factions down without pissing anyone off. roughly put :p

I don't know that feel. I have over 2k troops stashed away in my 2 towns and 2 castles along with 200 rolling around with me. Bonus is that all 2k stashed away are fully upgraded troops that I trained in battles or between times of peace.

Without cheating ofc. Trainer skill is so useful plus its nice when the towns/castles themselves can upgrade them for you too.

I'll be breaking away from my faction (aden) when I capture a castle they don't give me.. eventually. Then start the long and arduous journey of pacifying the land.

Definitely. You get the two together and you just cannot lose men faster than you recruit them. You'll actually turn people down so you don't bleed gold like a sieve. Its insane.

also build schools in fiefs ASAP when fief reach 50+ (or somewhere in that area) loyalty they will be happy to join your army and also you can be lucky they are upgraded, once I recruited about 50 nord foot soldiers (the first one after recruit I believe its called nord footsoldier not entirely sure tho) from -1- fief! 1 click, 50 rank 1 soldiers

Let me find this screenshot...

Had 100 relation with that village... This happens really rarely though.
I wouldn't say schools are so useful though, by the time it gets builld you could already reach 100 by just doing quests.

LOL! yeah I have 3 fiefs at 100 too but they never gave me troops upgraded more than once :( maybe that's the cons of playing nord? and the pros of playing swadia?

yeah but with schools I can kill enemies (get money and xp) AND gain trust at the same time :p often, the villages is also bandit infested and that's good boost too
