This isn't something explicit in the rules and people still fail to read the most important part of them which is:
If your common sense is not working, here are some more specific guidelines. This is not an explicit list, common sense always overrides disputes. Do not come crying "it's not prohibited in the rules" if you invent a new creative way to be an idiot and get punished.

Thing is, this isn't something recurrent (Fips already raised some of the maps gate mechanisms to avoid such things) and we rarely someone using this "trick" to gain an unfair advantage.
Also, as op stated:
4. 722 was opening the gate as attacker and this guy comes running in and takes position on the mechanism with his shield up, I had to get behind him so he turned around and 722 and ego could attack him which was impossible otherwise.
meaning not much harm was done since he was the only one there and you easily adapted to control the situation. (if there were copycats it could've gotten ugly).
