Seeking explanation for difference between Gold and Silver Crpg money.

I see I have amounts of gold and silver on my character page.  Can I use both to pay upkeep and buy gear?
Which am I earning during ticks while playing, gold or silver, or both?

Gold - cRPG money, used for everything not-strategus related (Buying items from shop, paying upkeep after rounds)


Silver - Strat money, used for everything strategus related (Army upkeep, buying equipment in Strategus campaing map)

Ticks earn you only Silver, unless you're recruiting troops (iirc)

Wait, don't we earn gold to pay for upkeep during crpg ticks?  I pay a lot in maintenance but the gold stays pretty steady.

Strategus ticks, used over time in Strategus (campaing part), create either tiny amounts of silver or (most popular use) troops,
cRPG ticks (x1-x5 ticks every 50 seconds or something on servers) generate both STRATEGUS ticks and cRPG gold used for in-game (not strat) upkeep.
