if you want heavier armor go for something arround brown rus lamellar armor,it will offer you good protection, less upkeep and less weight penalty. Plate would be over the line thing,i think clib is too heavy for you.

Either I'm playing with 11 body armor or I'm playing with 69 () body armor
I gotta say when you are on siege 11 body armor is enough because you don't get shot to pieces but for the battle mode I'd rather pick 69 body armor because it protects you from many arrows and random swings and you often can spam someone because he might glance (if your footwork is good aswell)

Use whatever armor you enjoy looking at. Don't worry too much about stats.

Also: high armor values and good footwork can mean absolute death for certain builds with low damage output, ie 1 handers without loomed weapons and/or low power strike, etc.

I've never played a server where people split up as much or as often as on EU1.  No wonder range is having a field day.

With a shield you should wear less armour, that's what the shield is for.

Without a shield, armour up.  I've worn plate armour for about a year now, it makes a huge difference once you learn how to counter the momentum of enemy swings so they glance all the time.  Running into or away from swings can reduce the speed bonus and damage, often below plate's threshold.  Then you can shrug off a dozen hits at least.

Ranged-wise, people plain old shoot you less when there are softer targets around.  It's a fact.
Arrows are ignorable unless the enemy has 6+PD and MW Rus Bow-Long Bow and MW Bodkins.
Crossbows don't hurt much if it isn't MW Arbalest and MW Steel Bolts.
Throwing hurts, but use the armour to soak as much as you can so your soft teammates don't have to.
