Better to learn to kick while you have the cushion of blocking while doing it, then wait until if you fuck up you die.

Learn all of the basics first.

Control of Swing Directions
Control of Block Directions
Learning when to use what swing
Footwork
Ability to choose fights, terrain, etc.

After you have a solid foundation, you can try and learn kicks and chambers.
However, the ONLY way to get "good" at them is trial and error. At least, for everyone I know that does it, that is how it works.
Spend 1-2 months kicking when you think is necessary and you will slowly start getting it.
Do not practice both kicking and chambering at the same time, you wont spend enough time alive to actually enjoy the game...

I recommend the baiting method, wait until you see someone beelining towards you, then start back pedaling a bit (easier when you're holding a block/attack - you're slower so they eventually catch up) and they'll be perfectly lined up to kick. Gives you a free hit most of the time

In my opinion you need to start the kick earlier than you think.

I tend to use it against facehugging shielders the most, since they are the most predictable in their movements. It is defienatly a worthy move to learn since it can basicaly grant you a free ovearhead

I like to try to kick them while I am a shielder, by the time they think "Hey I can slash that foot!" I have already started a swing to counter theirs.

EDIT: But other than that, I usually won't unless I am 100% sure it will work, like in a hallway or corner
Yes, been posted before. Rather than practicing swinging a weapon, it would be better to go 1 hander and learn a martial art that specializes in takedowns, because that's all that really matters in that sport.

I think the biggest necessity for successful kicking is to get your footwork down, a million times easier once you master that.

Can you be more specific? As far as I know, footwork consists of moving forward/backward in order to get in and out of weapon reach, turning to speed up side-swing contact and circling around people to force them into obstacles.

You pretty have much the idea. It's all about putting yourself in the most effective place for the current situation. Forcing swings to connect early, but not too early (cuz then you'll glance). You can even force others to glance with proper footwork, which is quite fun. Moving in and out of weapon reach as you said. Getting behind or to the side of people, getting to certain angles to make swings and feints harder to read and block properly. Predicting movements and dodging kicks, and kicking the enemy yourself. There's a lot to footwork, it's something that just sort of gradually happens overtime.
