You don't get to keep the loot, and in my experience you have not been able to keep the peasant gear from auto-peasant battles ever. However, I didn't have my first peasant-gear battle until two days after they added the feature, so it may be that for up to two days you were able to loot peasant gear when the defender was granted it automatically.
