I commited the same mistake as you and lost about 180 troops, and I have never heard of loosing all your troops from canceling an attack before that. Improve FAQ someone :o?

You shouldn't lose 100% of your troops when you cancel a battle, that's even worse than losing 100% of your troops when you retreat in a siege as the attacking army (especially when attacking a castle or city).
