What is the population for? Do they increase/decrease something? As stationed troops seem to cost money and the population also defends the village, why no exchange them all into population? Are there any limits?
The logic of war seems to be that if a belligerent can fight he will fight.

population does not defend against raids.

Population acts the same as troops in a regular battle.
You pay no Upkeep on population, but can't get them back.

You might want to take those troops back into action at some point. (You can't convert pop to troops, as far as I see.) Otherwise, good questions.
