Horse's neck as good as the head?

Do this and remove the ears. I hate having my horse die because some crossbowman decided to give him a stylish piercing mid-battle.

This has really bothered me. Why is the head hitbox on the tip of the nose making an axe or bolt that directly penetrates the skull do zilch? I've been seeing quite a few "unicorns" as I like to call them prancing around lately with bodkins and other ranged items protruding from their brains.
