Something I found in another forum:

Quote

Change some settings in rgl_config.txt:

1. render_buffer_size
By default I think this is set to 15. Judging by its name I'd say this is the size of the buffer used for rendering individual frames, so in theory 15mb should be more than enough at any resolution. However, lots of people claim to get a huge performance boost by increasing this value, and I'm inclined to believe them. I suggest setting this value to half of your video card's memory (256 in my case), but you may want to experiment with this value a bit for yourself. Changed mine to 512, huge difference!

2. max_framerate
You'd think setting your framerate to reflect your screen's refresh rate would produce optimal results, but this is not the case. In alot of games input is handled in the same loop as rendering frames, so a low framerate will result in input lag. I suggest you set this value to at least 120. If you experience alot of screen tearing make sure it's not a multiple of your screen's refresh rate. I set it to 140. Didn't try this one.

3. use_ondemand_textures
Set this to 0. It might increase startup time a little but imho it's better to load textures in advance than while playing. This one helped, too!

Seems to have vastly improved performance for me!

Also, if you suffer random midgame freezes, try "Force Single Threading" in the Advanced launcher options.
Made any kind of freezes go away for me.

Or if you edit the config just change:
force_single_threading = 0
to
force_single_threading = 1

This file: rgl_config.txt

Doesn't exist for me anywhere in M&B.

C:\Users\YourUserName\Documents\Mount&Blade Warband\

That path should be true for Vista and Win7.

But should be the same for XP if you just navigate to Documents of your user acc.

It also feels like having V-sync or something on. Game feels a lot less smooth... for me, at least.

Feels less smooth with force single threading on. You can try it yourself to be sure, though.

Apart from all the tips that have been said, what really improved and stabilized framerate, in my case, was buying a SSD hard drive (and installing Windows and games in it) and OC'ing the CPU a bit.

Besides that, every "tweak" you may perform won't affect your framerate much.

Well, this will make only one core being used = performance drop, no?
Mods compatible with cRPG. New crosshairs, textures, sounds, yay.

Well not sure, i have 8 cores and while i had it enabled i was experiencing  2-5 second screen freezes so i would assume the game is rather badly optimized for multi-threading.
Totally depends on your individual cores' power i'd say.

But overall multi-threading does not automatically mean it's better ;)

So give it a shot, worked for me.
