Horses in Strategus

Question - Do I need skillpoints in riding, or I can use horses for map movement even without this skillpoints?
Liitle too expensive for me, just to try it out.

On the strat map, you can use horsies to speed you up without riding.

But if you are attacked, then you cannot use them to fight your battle, unless you have someone who has riding.
