is katana 1 handed or 2 handed?

i can use my katana w/ my shield, but its under two handed weapons in the shop. what skill governs it, 1handed or 2handed?

Depending on which mode you have it in dictates what WPF it uses. More simply put, with a shield it will be a one handed weapon and require 1 hander proficiency. Once you drop your shield it will go back to relying on your 2h proficiency.

There are speed and power penalties applied when using with a shield though I think, since it's primarily a 2h.

You can see exactly how the speed and damage changes. Go to the equip screen before a battle or duel, an hover your cursor over the Katana to see both the 1 handed stats and the 2 handed stats. No guess work required.
