my ping is p***ing me off!

hey, my ping is REALLY starting to annoy me...
today - i went from 26 ping to 99 to 500 to 1200 in a matter of 10 seconds.
it jumps wildly - all over the place and sometimes i have to wait up to 9 seconds before it strikes.

i was wondering if there is anything that can fix this? or even just stabilize it...

here's my computer... stuff?

6gb ram
Optus broadband - cable (best there is)
nvidia Graphics card
Acer  desktop
intel core i7
and windows 7 (i think this is the problem)

PLEASE RESPOND WITH HELPFUL COMMENTS D:

Ping does not have anything to do with your computer specs. It is your internet.

You can try to reset your router see if it help.

Then i suggest to tracert to crpg server you are playing on and identify if you get packet lost or lag spike during the routing, your problem is probably something with your ISP.

Type in command line "ping -t google.com" and see if you've got packetloss. That's what happening to me quite often (I've got also a cable connection), sometimes I've got packetloss for about 1 second which is enough to loose the connection to the server.

Do as Ginosaji suggests, for a while--an hour or more.  CRTL-C see what your statistics are, if you're a zombie you're welcome to watch this as well.  This is to determine if you have a general connection issue or not.  Having the best internet services means nothing, with cable you could have an issue with your modem, the wiring, or the connection outside.  As seasons change where I live, it's not uncommon for moisture to become an issue--sometimes a line tech has to come out and pretty much just disconnect/reconnect my line from the pole to the house.

If you have other people using your connection in your household this can give you packetloss/ping spikes as well.

Or just start the ping command when you start playing cRPG and look if you've got packetloss or high pings to google at the same time as in the game.

with the ping -t www.google.com i get an average of 26 and it doesn't go any higher than 30...

but in-game is another story... from 26 to 1200 :/

"If you have other people using your connection in your household this can give you packetloss/ping spikes as well."
i have a brother that hosts a server on another computer - maybe is that the problem?

Safe bet the server he's hosting on the same connection could be causing you lag spikes.

There is no such thing as the best internet, you can have good bandwith but it all depend if the routing from you to the server is good or not.

If this happens very frequently (easily reproductible), try playing with your brother's server offline and see if you still get lagspikes. It will not solve your issues but at least give some clues.

Meh, I have the exact same problem lately man. Ping spikes up to 700 and I randomly d/c too. Shits annoying.

Only difference is I don't really have anyone in my house torrenting or hosting servers.

Suggestions?

You just said what the problem is, your brother is downloading. When he is downloading he is using your bandwitdh and and therefore resulting in you getting high ping. Any gamer should know that downloading while playing a multiplayer game never works out.
