How to use kick?

I've started using kick more lately and even though I land it I can never seem to take advantage of it.  I've seen people chamber an attack, kick, and then release the attack but when I try to do the same it never works.  Anyone have any tips?

You have to wait until the foot is back on the ground before attacking.

It's timing, you have to time your attack at the right moment to hit someone after stunning him with a kick.
