Is it possible to just sign up for battles after creating a main on the website? I mean the mercenary feature and ignore the map completely.

Yes, but you must spawn on the map first. Then you can forget about map.

The goal of Strategus battles shouldnt be to deprive your enemies of players, but to have full roster both sides and have the gear/tactics/strategy win the day rather than lack of merc support.
