Let the devs do the expensive difficult crap like animations and hundreds of pieces of gear then recycle all their hard earned assets and creativity into a Total Spartan Immersion mod for it on the engine while criticizing the original devs constantly.

Nah, doesn't strike me as very wise either. I imagine the engine grows with the game development so you'd want both to be under your control.
