Did you try "repair" button?
Also if you had to put mb.exe in your mb game folder there must be something with your install. It's supposed to be there already. If nothing help try reinstalling MB if you figure out it's the problem.
Though Documents/mb shouldn't contain that exe, so for testing purpuses I'd remove it.
PS: I always used a non steam version and never had such problems.
