Going on for a week or so on the other hand does. It becomes a lot more public, more people are affected, and whichever company is attacked has to endure a lot more harm.

Exactly, and if your DDoSing with a botnet.. you wouldn't activate it to simply do it for a day (activating your botnet means that the computer detects the virus and when the DDoS stops, control of the computer is handed back and the virus could be removed. They're in it for the long game most likely...
