Here is one of my previous replies to an old similar post. My setup changed a little bit but the point stands. You should sell the very first loompoint you get, so that you have enough gold to try out any gear without worrying about upkeep, and then you should accumulate enough to get yourself a +3 item. Remember that 2 loompoints and some gold (100 to 150k) can get you a masterwork on the market. Also, you may take Tzar's offer and join them to benefit from their armory. Our armory is much much smaller and humbler but know that our doors are open to you as well. There is masterwork stuff in the armory you can freely use.

How much do loom points tend to go for?

Not sure I get you.
Why wouldn't it be worth selling?
How would I go about getting a +3 after 2 retires?

You have problems because you are not in strong clan. Try joining byz, grey, eques, drz or some other clan that plays gamemode you like to play.
Eu2 is a gold sink, better play on eu1 and learn to survive longer.

Many +3 items on the marketplace are sold for 2 looms + some gold, like 150k gold.

If you use gear that allows you to make gold then after 2 entire generations you'll easily have enough to buy a +3 of your choice on the marketplace.

Cheers for the explanation.
So if you were offering 1 loom point in exchange for a Masterwork/Lordly,
how much would you be expected to pay along with it?

Depends on what masterwork.
I have some experience with marketplace and I can say sometimes you can buy a +3 item for mere 650k gold (which equials ~ 1 loompoint + 300k), then you trade it for a better item, then again, so you end up with having a top-tier masterwork item for 650k, yet you can sell it for around 900k.

But on the topic, the best way to go for beginner is to retire 2 times and buy a good masterwork weapon (unless you play cav, then - a horse) for 2 lpts + 50-150k.

I'm hearing people say, that after your first retirement,
rather than use your loom point to +1 an item, you're better off offering
your loom point on the market for a +1 item and some gold. Is that true?

Also, I'm seeing an awful lot of people saying it's better to loom gauntlets before
body armor. Why is that?

It might be true since, after some recent patch, you get the most bonus when you +1 an item, at +2 and +3 it only gets smaller bonuses.

Now as I think about it, it might really be the best way to trade a loompoint for +1 item plus some gold. The only problem I see is that there are not too much +1 items on the market, so it might take some time. If you don't find someone to trade with for the next generation after retirement, then trade 2 loompoints + gold for a +3 item, that should take not much time.

Also, I'm seeing an awful lot of people saying it's better to loom gauntlets before
body armor. Why is that?
The main reason is probably that having a +3 gauntlets is much more versatile thing than having a +3 armour. People often change their outfits, and it's not easy to trade a full +3 set for another full +3 set, but since you can use most gauntlets with most sets, you will most likely not have to trade it. You can use the same gauntlets as an archer, as a cavalry or any other build. Thats why gauntlets cost just a little less than raw 3 loompoints and are the most expensive part of armour on the market.
However, loomed body armour gives you +5 to body and +5 to legs, while gauntlets only give +5 body armour. People often seem to underestimate the leg armour importance, but to me the armour bonus of body armours seems to be more important.

Anyway, my main point is: don't loom anything by yourself unless it's a very rare thing that is unlikely to be traded on the marketplace. And since body armour is cheaper than gauntlets - get body armour first.
Well, then again, after this patch I'm not so sure it's not worth it to loom something by yourself... need to think about it.
What weapon are you going to loom, by the way?

Lol, I felt this in my beginning time but now I got looms left, have mw item/s and one or two weeks ago I had 1.57million gold, now, as an archer I have reached 1.6million today...
Hope you'll pass your 'poor time' and change to 'I dont care about upkeep'

Cheers for the detailed explanation.

I'm thinking of either looming a Ranseur or Heavy Japanese
lamellar armor.
