Anyone else think that being able to change your pseudonym without having to  retract your application to a battle and then having to reapply would be nice?

No, it makes sense as it is now. After all the battle leader accepts someone under a certain name (even if it's a pseudo). It would be irritating to see people changing their pseudo as often as they want. The battle leader and anyone in the faction you're applying for may see your real name but he doesn't see it ingame. Wouldn't be too helpful. Just choose it "wisely" in the beginning...

it is a good idea, I like to make my pseudonym as mean as possible, then I come up with an even nastier name but I gotta retract. For example, AdamLanzoDuelElites4lyfe, then I want, AdamLanza720Noscope
