Or maybe you can start the old system on your new PC and get the key from there.

Which is why I asked if it is somehow possible to use drive from a laptop in a desktop pc.

If you've got a valid Windows 7 license then you have also a valid Windows 7 license key.

That's not always true. Some business and academic licenses don't come with reusable keys.

What everyone meant is that it's not wise to use the same installation permanently on your new PC. Of course you can try to boot it to recover data.
