just recently i received a verification thing on my paypal account, they asked me to send them documents proving my identity. They wanted either a copy of my social security card, birth certificate, tax documentation, or a copy of a bill which had my name and address on it. I contacted them over it, and they told me from time to time they do security checks on accounts, and i was randomly chosen for this and had to provide the necessary documents or else they would continue locking my account.
The whole thing smelled of a scam to me.
