Anyway, for practical matters, neither granularity nor size of a dimension can be arbitrarily large, which means that those two problems don't exist. Just choose a lower granularity limit and a max size and you can remap it all to one dimension.

For practical matters, assuming we live in R^3 is by far the easiest. Integer problems are generally much harder.
