Strat future

The post of Fipsie made me think about strat future.

Also, what's with everyone saying that strat is getting wiped anytime soon? Because of what harald posted some time ago? Lol, yeah right. He just simply stated that strat will be wiped again at some point. That could be tomorrow or in one year.

I share Fips' sentimets. Obviously it is up to devs, and we all know that - in all their wisdom - they are capable of doing most fucked up turns and corners. But let's think about this in reasonable manner and try to forsee the future.

I asked myself what I would do being a developer, with new project under costruction, with community that will (and is needed to) support this new project, with strat and crpg in full run. This is what I think:

  • I (the theoretical developer) need  the community to stay interested in strat/crpg cause this is my basic playerbase of the new game. A lot of guys showed their interest in project by donating investing in it, so the only thing I need to do is to keep this interest up. Hence the dev blogs. But it also means that all forum - game - drama is more than welcome! It keeps community alive...
  • At the same time I (the theoretical developer) do not want this game to conclude too quickly. My new project is still under construction, so I do want all these guys play the game, but do it slowly, untill I am ready to release the new game. Hence I would keep the 1/3 rule as long as possible and focus on most important bugs. I dont want to lose players cause they got bored, or wiped, or discouraged from playing in any other way...
  • Just before the relase of the new game things will need to speed up a bit, just to draw even more guys into game - old players who lost their interest and the new ones who will got involved in new project soon after. So I (the theoretical developer) will change major things shortly before the release of new game. (I dont even mention more direct ways of gaining people's interest mentioned in NDA'd sections)

For that reasons I would not expect anything major, inlcuding wipe, until the new project gets to the final stage. Unless devs will need to test some features to find out how the lab rats beta testers react and behave - then the wipe and the new strat will happen earlier; in such case we will see some mechanics to be used in the new project in the new strat. But I seriously doubt it. This things already happened. This strat tests some good shit and let devs learn a lot. The rest will need to be balanced out in live environment of new game's beta.

Considering the level of development of the new, fantastic, most brilliant melee game of all times, I think that we will play this Strat round for some time. We will see the 1/3 rule gone, maybe increased xp, or other things like that changed when the new project is close to release. This will cause a lot of battles, lots of fun...  and the mod will be dead soon after that...

What do you think???

I think you overlooked one huuuge point which is of the utmost importance:

The new game is is very, very far away in terms of replacing cRPG. And I am not talking about 2 or 3 months but a probable time frame of 12 to 18 months.

Ofc, I don't know this for a fact but it seems very likely.

So, every speculation about the new thing replacing the old thing is completely useless at this point. Not to mention that those involved in Strat are probably still just the minority of this community. Everyone else is just playing for the fun of... well... playing.

blame it on the lack of information, most new players do not know what is this strategus about and even i only participate as mercenary.

and i play this about one year now...
Tseng: Used to the bitter taste of refusal, this only serves to reinforce his greatest life lession yet.
Cloud: And that is?
Tseng: Bitches, man.

Benkei, I respect your point of view, but I'm here mainly because of Strategus and most people that I know, too. This is of course great that everyone has their place, I know even those who are familiar only with other traders  from market hehe, so believe me - I know what I say when I call for more love for Strategus. cRPG is like pampered child with over 9000 patches under all year round Christmas Tree, while Strategus a hungry orphan  Erasmas +1

The new game is going to replace the old, day 1. If not by the cRPG playerbase, by the new one which will be 5 times as big as cRPG ever had.

But then, the "Epic" (Strategus 2.0) is probably going to be, like you said, much later in the future than the actual new Melee game. So Strategus is going to be played for a while, except if they down the servers.

Butan, noone will play Strat when the new game is released, casue Strat is stongly driven byy crpg XP, I'm afraid...  so, except for the initial phase it new game will down Strat almoset immediately

You're right actually. So it would be good if the devs changed a lot of stuff (as you said, 1/3 gone, more xp, more incentive to continue to play) while Epic will still be under construction. Or just forget it and wait, they have the keys.

Yea, Day 1 it's released in a proper state.

You're overlooking several things:
First release is pre-pre-pre-pre-alpha or something, only for Scholars and probably barely having any armours/weapons, more like a tech demo than anything else. chadz mentioned that this MAYBE will happen at the end of the year... don't count on it.

All I am trying to say is that cRPG will be our home for another few months before anything else will be even close to it.

I get the impression you all believe that in 3 months we get a new game. That is completely unrealistic. Try 13 months instead.

So, even thinking about what might happen to Strat when there is something else... at this point useless.

If you wanna improve Strat then it's probably smarter to improve on what there is now without making any assumptions about future projects. Not to mention that Epic is years away.

Just my 2 cents.

Each past wipe has come with a large update so unless they are going to do when then...

There are a bunch of things that they could fix but frankly none of them need a wipe to be done.

but if they dont wipe strat then it will end up with only a couple of clans playing and no one else giving a fuck. (say your clan loses most of its fiefs 2 months into strat. what chance do you have of ever getting back into it without either a wipe or becoming a vassal.)

Couldnt agree more, just find an alternative to 1/3 rule and let the bodies hit the floor.

Redoing the weapon proficiency/weapon master system is a need that would benefit with a strat wipe. Consider all the strength infantry characters with 0 weapon master.

I'm not a programmer but it seems easy enough.  I know there's variables that differentiate between a fief army and an open field army.  So it should be simple enough.

Logic (for fief battles only) would be :  Either you need 1/3rd of the defenders troop + population, or you need at least 1800 troops.

Seems simple enough.
