Besides a loompoint it gives you 30 more xp per tick in the next generation.

you get a loompoint
you go back to lvl 1
you get 30 xp bonus

i really suggest doing this, as heirloomed weapons are very handy. It might have taken you a shitload of time to get to lvl 31, but i ensure you. it goes faster and faster (with the xp bonus and because you have experience in the game. Maybe you are also better known on the battlefield so you will be accepted for strat battles faster)

Sell the heirloom point (450-500k gold or so), and then buy a +1 or keep saving. You can also go to 32 and get 2 heirloom points, so in 1 gen you would have enough for a Masterwork item if you are also making a bit of gold while playing. 31-32 takes about the same time as 1-31 (a bit longer), but you get the gen bonus sooner if you retire at 31. Being high level is more useful than a +1 imo, but you might want to change your build

If you decide to gather LPs and gold by retirements, always retire on lvl 31 for the first 15 generations. At gen 16 you will have the max bonus xp each tick, that is for x1 you get 450 more xp (15*30) than on generation 1. For x5 that means you'll get 7250 xp per tick.
However that is not a must and you might like a reason to play to lvl 32 and retire then. You get 2 LPs as said before, but not the 30 xp bonus twice as you would if you retired two times on lvl 31.

But most important, play while you got fun. Doing 15 generations will cost a lot of time.

indeed, you get that 30 xp bonus untill gen 16. this means you get

(30*number of times you retired*multiplier + 1000*multiplier)/minute
on battle and siege servers

DTV and strategus also get the bonus (depends on way more parameters though)
and in eu_5 you can change the '1000' with '1500'
