It has to be on your end. I'm in California too and I went from 85-90 ping constantly to 65-70 ping. Huuuuuuuuge difference.

South Cali, used to be 78-80 ping, was a period of time maybe few weeks or months it began steadily climbing, eventually reaching low 90's, and recently within last week or two back to 79 to low 80's. Um. Maybe internuts are just fucked in general. Still would be nice to have a texas server or something that evens out pingage more.

Have you tried calling your ISP and see if they are throttling you?  My ISP does that often for P2P stuff and it shows C-rpg as a p2p client.

I used to get similar ping here in flagstaff. I tried a number of things and some eventually ended up helping.

1 thing that helped me out majorly in my old apt was that I made sure that I wasn't using an outlet that was being over worked. In other words, I didn't plug my router and modem into an outlet already being used by an outlet extension or any of that.
I called our ISP(Suddenlink at the time) and they came out and "fixed it" a few times but things would always go shitty after a week or so.
Turns out our apartment was just wired horribly. The spikes during peak hours were caused by an over saturated node.. If I had to guess id say that is probably what you're dealing with. A great way to check is to do one of those isp raters in the morning when things are less busy and then check later on in the evening during peak hours. If you see a huge difference in performance then you're likely dealing with an over saturated node. Who's your isp?

What Karma said. I'm in North Cal atm (school), but my home is in Socal, and my ping is around 70-85 (ranges due to traffic) no matter which way I am in.

I'm close to Atlanta, Georgia and about half the time I get my normal ping of 40ish, but the other half I'm up at 80-90. I just went from a connection with a max downstream of 200kb/s(!) to one with a max downstream of 3 MB/s. I live on a road with a total of three log cabins, it's a wonder that I even have high-speed internet at all, so I can't imagine it's an overloaded node. I don't even think my neighbors have ever heard of the internet.

With physical network nodes, It really does depend on where they are located. I know suddenlink's nearest one from flagstaff is in a spot in central LA. Node congestion can actually happen to anyone anywhere, depending on who their isp is and how their network is set up.
