I think the real problem is the attackers spawn area being so incredibly close to the wall that ranged weapons were able to fire into their spawn/siege equipment with great effect (and from multiple angles).In normal PvP castle sieges ranged weaponry isn't that decisive even when defenders have plenty of bows/crossbows and the discipline to re-use them.Basically, the city scenes are the real problem, crossbow and archer domination are a symptom of that.
