They make you delete it because they don't want you transferring gold and items back and forth between alts.

Also, why do you want a totally new main? You can just retire if it's build problem, or use the market/buy something else if it's gear related.

If it is name related, then you can simply retire one last time and use your "one hour freebie window" to request an entirely new name.

With the market, there is absolutely no reason to retire if you have the patience to trade looms for stuff that you want, unless one of your "alts" has more stuff then your main, in that case... funny but no...

I'm wondering about a option to switch the "Main" title to one of your Alts. I fail to see how it would be something abusive.

You can't turn anyone marked "Alt" into a "main". Ever. If you want the reasons, use the search function.
