riding should be maxed if you are raising agi up

you can get by with 2-4 shield skill, using either kite or cav shields

extra riding above the requirement for horse DOES help and is VERY noticeable

I would also give up 10 WPF on your main weapon and get polearm up to 75-90 if you want to do any lancing

Why would you only want 5/4 riding/athl? They, together with PS, is ALWAYS the ones you want to max out. IF is the last you want to put points in (like a nice bonus if you got extra points). Do yourself a favour and get this 18/18 build instead.

With the nice 100 polewpf I also suggest to get a warspear for when you don't want to bring a horse. 1h, warpsear and shield is a very nice combination.

You can fight as well as foot as a horseman. If you will go to 18agi, max agi and riding. Weapon master 4 is enough. With shield 4 you can wear a plate covered round shield, one of the best shields of the game. Cheap, coverage, durability.

EDIT: Even though a 18/18 build is best (he wants 1h and pole so he needs as much WM he can get) I went on and made a 21/15 build, just because I'm such a nice guy.

WARNING! Do NOT use a shield and spear on foot! It might go well when you have teammates with you put 77wpf is WAY too little for any dueling! You can EASILY be spammed! But with the right timing and support you might still be able to go hoplite well enough, just remember that switching to the 1h is usually the best option.

He would still need more WM to get both 1h and pole to a decent lvl.

Not to be a pure 1h cav. I didn't read he want to be a 1h/pole hybrid. Wm 4 is not enough. You need 6Wm to be a 100/130+-. Btw, you can play with the skill points adding WM instead IF.

The build zapper said is best if you insist on having pole and 1hand. Jack of all trades. Master on none.
