I think I'll go with 24/21 for this gen. I was told on EU_1 that hoplites need all the WPF they can get. I'm a little worried about 4 WM, but I can invest it all in polearms. The blue tunic over mail may be too light, but it suits my playstyle, so I'm looming the ashwood pike.

One thing to add: I'm not looking to have a 1h in reserve, if I have to solo I just kick and poke. I'll definitely try 7 PT with some character at least. Regarding 7 PS, I'm reminded of byz_teeth's 21/21 with 3 shield skill. What armor should I eventually loom with these builds?

Hey guys,

I'm a returning player looking for a level 34 hoplite build. I'd mostly be playing on EU_1. I'm also wondering what gear to use.  Provided I have the starter heirlooms (inc. +3 Lordly Tunic over Mail, +3 War Spear), and +2 heavy gauntlets and a +2 ashwood pike, what should I loom? Should I trade or use the heirloom exchange?

Thanks in advance!

The Long Awlpike outclasses the Corseque in every category. It has 1 more speed, 21b overhead instead of 21p and more stab damage. The weapons mentioned above are unaffected by the increase in 2d polearm buffs resulting form the increased polearm sideswing speed. This implies the other unaffected weapons aren't balanced. The regular awlpike is quite well off as well: a +3 ashwood pike is a regular awlpike with +3 speed.

The Corseque, Ranseur, Spetum and Partisan were historically used to mess around with shielders. Their offensive nudge should be given the ability to disturb blocking shielders within the weapons range, leaving the user vulnerable. Strong support weapons generate situations that award adaptative thinking, and reduce redundancy in game play. Shielders would no longer solo up the ladders, but rely on ranged and other melee.

Hybrids should be more viable, yes, but then it must be in all aspects and not only for the crossbow, because this is the best hybrid, actually it shouldn't even be called a hybrid because is there such a thing as dedicated crossbow? in a way that resembles a dedicated archer? No, because the investment is cheap.
That is a valid reflection on the fact that medieval archers needed significantly more training.
Sure, archers get the better 1slot weapon to compensate, but only a hunting crossbow? Sure, 1slot weapons should be somewhat weaker, but only a quarterstaff/shortened spear? One solution would be to allow them to use decent, but not awesome, weapons in both categories by making them 1.5 slot for instance.

When a 1h passes some criteria like 80 length / shield bonus / 30 pierce stab / blunt swing it should be 1 slot. 1handers with cutting swings and no special attributes should all be made 0 slot.
I have nothing against a 0slot costing 9000+ gold, but they should be 1 slot when loomed as to remain viable for pure shielders. Hybrids have a lot loom as it is.

There should be a way to use a decent crossbow with pole-arm/2hander. Weapons like the double-sided lance / regular spear / hafted blade / bastard sword could at least be made 1 slot to coincide with the added 0 slot 1handers.
