Faction Halls / Re: Order of the Lance
« on: October 31, 2014, 04:44:01 pm »
My lord tankmen, would that I could answer your call and restore our Order to its former glory! Sadly, I've put Maximus to pasture and devoted myself to mad alchemy.

It is prophesied though that a day will come where all lords raise their banners. That fateful day will no doubt see the return of the mad knight ready to deliver death with both mount and blade.

Not exactly what you are looking for but thought I'd mention it anyway. I am looking to trade my MW Knightly Arming for a Mighty Broad One Handed Battle Axe. The difference between the Knightly Arming and Nordic Champion is nearly negligible anyway and I am certain that Celeres would outperform any Nordic trash you might buy anyway. So if you ever get around to looming your axe and want to trade, let me know.

Game Balance Discussion / On Horse Bumping
« on: September 19, 2011, 10:26:34 pm »
I am going to take a page out of Overdriven's book and ask that rage be attempted to kept out of this thread. I am going to try myself but I think some leaked in anyway.

To start with, this patch while weakening Cavalry did not 'break it' or make it 'unplayable' so please do keep that out of here. I think the 6 riding for a Courser is not too unrealistic (though too high for Desert Horse). But back to the actual topic of this thread.

The stunning effect after Horse Bumping is in my opinion too extreme. I GTX while alive for the first time ever last night. Perhaps if this was one of the earliest Cavalry changes, the story might've been different but in light of other changes, it's unreasonable. I am primarily a Lancer Cav so other types please do chime in. But here are my issues with this:

1) With the angle nerf, if I take on an infantry head-on, he now needs to be in the center or very slightly to my then preferred side of the horse to ensure that a jump doesn't put him outside my lance's reach and get me killed. That used to mean that nearly every successful lancing run for myself will have a bump in it. However now, the bump cancels my lance thrust allowing it to do only 1/8 or so damage. If the full angle of lancing existed, this would not be an issue at all as every run would just be a wide lancing run.

2) I intentionally bump lance sometimes. I don't see many other Cav doing this one but it is a critical part of my Cav arsenal. A lot of inf will never drop their block and attack an oncoming cav, and a couched lance rarely catches an aware player. So I decelerate enough where I can bump, turn and lance. I hate losing something that I actively had to practice many times and I feel requires some measure of skill to do especially considering that the deceleration on a Courser means certain death on failure.

3) If I don't bump during the lancing, the bump then becomes a necessary follow-up. Part of this is due to the fact that my lance won't 1-shot anyone but the most lightly armored even at top speed (which I understand and won't dispute). However since many ranged players can survive, when I run after hitting my back is perfectly exposed. If I don't bump a good ranged player, I die. It tends to be as simple as that sometimes. Other times, the bump seals the deal so to say. The lance drops em down to 3% health and the bump finishes it.

4) The stun drops my shield block. I could perhaps live with all the offensive losses, but really, I drop my block??? I need that thing to protect me. It is not a minor concern, all but 1 of my deaths last night when mounted were due to the bump stun. Many of them were due to the shield drop.

5) The stun means I can't steer my horse. Get on a fast horse, hell, any horse and you'll realize the moment you can't maneuver your horse, something bad will happen. If ever I ping spike or rubberband, I run to the edge of the map and sit it out. This was even worse than the shield block dropping. This means that a cav can never maneuver through multiple players. I've found that a lot of 2hand players who can wreck teams use worse players as their early meat shields. It doesn't help your team much to kill the meat shield, he's going to die anyway so you bump him and take out the guy behind him. That offensive capability is lost. Defensively, many times the only way out of a tight situation is by ramming through enemy infantry arrayed irregulary such that you bump everyone whose weapon can reach you. This becomes impossible when you lose the turning.

Now while this is out of my range of expertise. I think the bump stun is even worse for a) Heavy Cav who deliberately follow up a lancing run by trying to bump everyone in sight. As is their prerogative! And b) to all bump slashers. As frustrating as bump slashing may be, it is a higher risk than lancing for usually a lower chance of reward in my opinion. But the other thing is, this is something that existed in Mount&Blade since near the very start. This was in the original Mount & Blade back when you could actually talk to Kradus, Xerina & Dranton back in good old Zendar. Kradus I believe taught you how to couch and Dranton how to bump slash. It's a bit absurd to take out something so integral to the game so late I think.

Mercenary Recruitment / Re: so it would seem...

My Grandmaster Tankmen, if you will have me, I shall fight by your side. As ever in battle, I will be your wingman following your epic charge and stealing all your kills.

400 Ninjas vs 20 Knights on an open field. Torak my friend, are you sure you have the numbers?

Strategus General Discussion / Re: Remember Buillin...

I know, what are you waiting for? We see your 4541 troops parked right outside of Buillin. The most epic battle ever in Strategus on the horizon and you decide to just remain teases. Whatever the result, this is going to be a battle to remember.

But talking is half of the fun

Indeed. I'll be honest, you seem like a decent guy. Disorganization got us into this mess as one hand wasn't noticing what the other was doing. We got backed into a corner. Perhaps if it was just you making a show of strength, it could've ended diplomatically (though the chance of it ending amicably had been lost).

Harpag the Grey however is arrogant and a warmonger. He lays claim to the title Lord of Praven when neither he nor anyone owns a city yet. His so-called terms mock us with every word and slander our name. The Grey Order needs to be defied before it manages to cow every faction into vassalage simply by threats. It is unfortunate that we must fight you as well, for I think we could've cohabited had it not been for The Grey. But if we must fight, so be it. I will saddle up with my fellow knights and refuse to go quietly into the night.

Slander and false humility.

Humility is not a trait I would associate with you, Lord of Praven. May I ask, when was this mighty city taken? When did it fall prey to your merciless horde? For I would like to remember the day where the free peoples of Praven came to be ruled by a tyrant.

You accuse of sins we have not committed, and furthermore accuse us of committing them in ages past at the death of an era when it little mattered. You say we have broken our word in this era as well? No agreement was made, it was merely considered. Words have weight, we acknowledge that. But it is a disservice to selectively ignore those that inconvenience your slanderous lies and false accusations. Have we declared war on the 22nd? Have we attempted to take Kulum, to deny them it? We even aided the village against DenBitre for 22nd wished a weakened foe when they engaged. We thought they may wish to save the lives of men but I now realize they did not have the strength to face a strong enemy alone. These are no fit masters for our vassalage. Still, we said we had no desire to fight and even proclaimed that we would aid them in battle if necessary on North American soil. As they were lacking allies who could do this and we ourselves thought we might be more of a hindrance when the battles are hosted across the pond, it was a friendly gesture with hopes of cohabitation.

But all of that is irrelevant now. Your army has been on the march before diplomatic missives were exchanged. You were hoping to either cow us or annihilate us from the outset. No ser, you are not a humble monk seeking balance. You are a tyrant and warmonger seeking only the flimsiest excuse to expand your territory and cow other factions into vassalage by picking on a small clan. But we will not stand for this and we shall see how you perform once the gauntlet is thrown down.

- Sir Alchemist, Knight Lord of the Order of the Lance.

If Cav took no skill, why is it that certain Cavalry consistently do better than others? There has to be at least a minimal level of skill involved for there to be any consistent discrepancy. Shpongled for example, out lances me more than 90% of the time. So does Tankmen. On the other hand, I out lance pretty much everyone else in my clan and most cavalry except for a few dedicated ones.

While I took advantage of unaware infantry, I relished taking down those who saw me coming much much more. Even more, I absolutely loved taking down those infantry who faked being unaware (which is why good horsemen don't immediately couch at seeing an 'afk' player but hold lance till the last moment). That is what kept me playing cRPG even after Strategus got taken down. Now, all any infantry has to do is jump and swing and I can't reach him but he can reach me. Cavalry has been forcibly pigeon-holed into being skillless backstabbers that we have always been accused of.

Tankmen! You missed the awesome stuff. 5 mins after you left, there was an update and all the item #'s got changed so everyone had different equipment. Ranged was almost non-existent and it was great!

It's not that it's one or the other, we can play both. Also, we'd look really classy using pistols from horseback.

General Off Topic / Re: Other Worthy Games?

Try other Bioware RPG's (including oldies).

And ALL Paradox Interactive games. They are all masterpieces of their art.

^ This. Those two studios still take up most of my gaming time. Though Paradox games need some time to breathe so don't try them when they've just been put out. I'd highly recommend trying out the Europa Universalis and Mass Effect (which only very slightly edges out DA) series from these studios.

Also agree with the recommendation on The Elder Scrolls but the updating of Fallout is amazing too.

Since you see seem to like RPGs, I'd very highly recommend The Witcher. It has great combat and graphics and an amazing story and they outshine even Bioware when it comes to making choices. For nearly every major plot choice I really had to think about it and there was nearly never a clear cut superior response. That is, a lot of the time you don't know what the 'good' or even the 'evil' choice is. On a couple of them I just walked away because I couldn't decide.

The Civilization series is also really addictive if you're into turn-based strategy. Oh, and Sid Meier's Pirates! is a great deal of fun and has something in it for pretty much everyone.

Valve's Team Fortress 2 was the multiplayer game I was addicted to prior to Warband. Don't think I'd be adding anything by recommending the Half-life series but I still recommend it. Portal however is by far my favorite Valve game and is probably the funniest game I've ever played.

And if you've never tried it, Braid is also an amazing game and will bend your mind.

Name change in progress!

Also, why did it have to be 25... I've actually gotten 24-0 and before and have proof then got team killed of all things. End of the map was 32-1. Time to work on earning "Free Lance" then.
