Beginner's Help and Guides / What does "Requirement" mean on the gear?

I am brand new to cRPG and multiplayer for this game in general. I know about the requirements for single player gaming but not about the gear for cRPG.
For example, I just got a Nomad Sabre and it has 6 requirement. What does that mean? :/

*Edit To clarify, that also means that I do not have the ability to use that sword and I do not fully understand why.
