Without a shield, I have come to appreciate the range on the Arab Cav Sword. It's slow as shit, but hits hard and you can outrange the shielders and have a better chance against 2handers with good footwork.

Yeah, but the problem with the 1h cav build is that if you can't match or outrun the lancers, you are dead. They almost always go for the horse. With 5 riding you might be fine, until you are spotted...

Just speaking from my own experience, not from facts. I'm sure if you are awesome 1h cav, you can manage with 5 riding...

Too little riding, you will be raped on horseback. I would suggest 18/18 or 15/21 for a cav build.

My current is 15/21
with:

*Converted: 2
*PS: 5
*Shield: 3
*Ath: 7
*Rid: 7
*WM: 7

All wpm to 1h. Works on land, sea and with a horse.
