Now we have druzhina armour, arabian armour, even ninja armour! So why not add some of these pearls as well?

Some things are probably just expensive, so that they can work as status objects. Like the two versions of the hourglass gauntlets where you can buy a gilded version with the same stats, but a higher price. If you buy the gilded pair, you're showing people that you are so rich that you can afford to pay extra just for the style.
Actually some more status objects would be nice, like more ornate versions of the swords, etc.

Also, from a logical point of view; wouldn't gold be more expensive than iron, yet less usable?

I wouldn't say that! And the claymore is still an effective weapon, if used the right way. Also; the claymore has much more reach than the great axe and a quite effective thrust.
And it ain't unbalanced, either.
