General / Re: Dev Blog #2 What is Melee?
« on: November 23, 2015, 03:55:47 pm »
From an economy perspective, How will ranged classes be balanced in terms of small scale persistent gameplay vs large scale war? Assuming Melee's mechanics are even remotely similar to Crpg, heavy concentrations of archers often hinder the gameplay in strategus battles. Yet, realistically in both game and i'd assume historically, the archer class is "cheap." Arrows and bows cost less compared to melee weapons while the class itself doesn't require armor, and since archers fight in the back, bows are easily reused. Furthermore, low skill players can contribute more as archers firing into crowds, than any other class, which if nothing else is an indirect nerf to the concept of the individual, highly skilled "mercenary."

From a clan leader/commonder's view, it's a tradeoff between efficiency and fun. The commander, who is trying to win a war is going to choose efficiency everytime.

It seems like people operate on the idea that if you display something in fiction, you're somehow supporting it. It's a gross misunderstanding of the nature of fiction.

It's because most Americans are so used to film/shows with the shallow, sentimental formula pumped out by Disney over and over that they can't enjoy a plot that doesn't always result with the good guys beating the bad guys and escaping unscathed-- save for their moral life lesson that will forever change them.

And I don't follow the cries of feminist, so I can only base this on what the previous posts have said, but to me, allowing Sansa to get raped and abused is not condoning these actions, but instead allows for the opportunity to really illustrate something meaningful. The reality is rape and abuse happen all the time and there isn't always a gallant savior to rescue these women seconds before their demise like hollywood always shows.

By always saving these characters instead of allowing them to experience these terrible things, you send a message that there is no second chances for you if get raped-- no happy endings-- because if that did happen in the plot it would "ruin" the character.

I'm quite interested in seeing how Sansa acts after this. Her innocence worked well early on, but was growing stale, and she can't truly become a mastermind politician without being crushed a few times.

I believe that event items can't get loomed. Cav changes I tweaked from another proposal that was somewhat confusing. Obsession with Tydeus is odd, he nerfed the longsword. Ranged deal as much damage as they did to heavy cav before before the armor soak change, and most experienced HP increases.

so the difference between pierce and cut damage doesn't affect different horses? what is the point of the armor then? or is it only for melee damage?

also, I like the nerfing of charge damage, but you make it even harder to bump groups because now you get stopped easier with less charge. is there a way to differentiate between damage down and knockdown potential in the "charge" catagory?

I don't have data to back this up, but I've heard from e-sport pros that with your RTS and MOBA (sc2, lol, dota the biggest right now) the mass majority of audiences for tourneys and streams are by people who don't actually play, but are familiar with the genre.

While FPS e-sports like CS:GO, CoD, Halo etc, which up until recently with the surge from MOBA games, have always been the dominant e-sports as far as viewers, have higher %'s of audiences who play those games.

To me, the difference between a "competive" game and an "e-sport" is that although both are high skill, clear ranking system and in-depth balanced games, but an e-sport also is entertaining to watch for audiences (both those who play the game and those who don't) Audiences provide money, players get sponsored and you have "proffesional" gamers.

I would argue that a game like Halo or CoD fails at being a good e-sport because they are terrible to watch and follow because the nature of the game. It is very hard to follow what is happening in these games.

League and Starcraft however, are very entertaining to watch because they are very easy to follow what is happening. Yet, you can't just label FPS games as bad entertnment for streaming, because is also a very popular and despite very fast paced and hectic action, remains easy to follow. CS was clearly developed with intention of being an e-sport. And unlike other FPS's, CS keeps "dull" colors and small maps, which I think is necessary for creating a viewable/entertaining show for audiences.

Assuming M:BG is "competitive," which I think most of us agree it could be. And assuming it is big enough to maintain a large playerbase, I think it could easily become an e-sport. This genre is obviously not Lol or Sc2, but if you compare M&B combat to CS, you have A) dull colors, easy to switch from player to player without bleeding eyes B) small maps that will keep all the action and potential strategy simple. But also C) a combat system where the point of interest is always players fighting point blank against each other and next to their team mates (which is how LoL and Sc2 plays out as well, most action can be viewed from a single angle.

Inb4 sir Loris and prince Oberyn gay orgy.

Am I a homophobe to find these scenes pointless? Most sex are supposed to/do add something either plot or character driven to the show. All the gay scenes have just been... well gay.

Is there going to be anyone to monitor/fix bugs next round? Because no matter what is added, something if not several things will go wrong and ruin the game just like in S4.

The map is way too big for NA. Cut the #of fiefs in half so that owning even a village actually means something again. This is the easiest way to bring tension and incentives to go to war.

Everyone has touched on the economy already, but one of the biggest issues especially in NA was mercs. You had to be allied with half of the map just get a decent roster. Reduce the number of mercs for field and village battles to like 35-40. Factions should never have to beg other faction members to fight for them so they don't get flag capped by being outnumbered. And with the decrease in plate, less XP will mean less random mercs.

edit:
Castle, not city. You confused me saying city, Im talking of the castle he retreated from accidently not the gear bugged city which you were also bugged attacking so made a mutual agreement on.

First, if LCO doesn't want to give the town and or troops gear back then that is their decision, and I don't think anyone would blame them either way. At 6 am with 0 tkov on, we prob woulda got capped anyway. History proves that.

However, people like creslin or whoever pappy is, that weren't in the know for our first war, really shouldn't comment on it, or maybe should post more, since we all love drama threads.

My point is, despite popular belief, tkov was not the only faction in VE during that war, and we never owned caraf castle. Now, in that case if we were the victor of LCO's blunder than we would have made a similar call, but that was 9fingers win and decision since mb did the attacks. That being said, that wave was the 4-5th on said castle, and the only thing at stake was population (2000 tickets) we decided to keep the castle but let everyone leave/give back capped troops and gear. Our reasoning, and if i wasnt typing from phone could show, was VE had already lost upwards of 5k from bugged attacks and we were tired of the same venue.

So, that sets the stage for shariz. keep in mind 2 things. 1) these were tkov battles 2) catapults and siege towers DID NOT WORK. LCO couldnt spawn with gear, they gave us the town. Even if they could have spawned with their gear, the amount we capped wouldnt have been enough for even 1k tickets and they would got capped regardless. We gave back the town/gear and troops weeks later after one of the Nord devs told us the siege bug was fixed. Of course the bug wasnt actually fixed for another month at least.

Yes, we did keep one castle and give back one town, but the circumstances were hardly the same. My arguement for giving back our town of Veluca would be so we could have a few more battles in the town. We don't give a shit about this buggy gimp strat, but getting to fight in your namesake is pretty cool, and better than cramped castles.

Wait, are we talking about the early morning fight right now or the MB fight a few weeks ago? If we're talking about the former, I don't really have anything to say on it because I wasn't involved with it what so ever. If we're talking about the latter, that's what I was talking about. I wasn't trying to troll your roster as I wasn't going to change sides in the first place.

Also, I've talked to 9finger only a handful of times so I'm not sure what you mean by this?

you're not the rhalzo from steam who offered me to switch sides for 25k? also mcdeath was, at least for that mb battle at 6am, in your strat faction.

Oh, you mean the time that I heard that TKoV was paying people gold to switch sides and I wanted to check if it was true or not? I remember talking to both Hobb and Tristran that night. Hobb tried to make a deal with me (like 30 minutes after I had sent the message in the first place and already had my question answered by Tristran), which was when I said I wasn't going to change sides and explained how I heard that they were paying people and I just wanted to find out if it was true.

I never actually made any deals.

And for this whole McDeath business - he did whatever he did on his own. I only saw that something happened when I got home from work and read the forums. So you'll have to bring it up with him since he's an adult and all.

Dude, I offered Jack of Frisia 25k like 15hours before the battle to fight for us, because like he said he is a 50/50 merc in this war. I don't think you can refute the fact that we have problems getting full rosters at 6am, we've been flag capped each time within the first 20 minutes. I've never talked to you before, and you came to me offering to switch to our side for gold. I said okay, i mean honestly what is 25k crpg? Ironically, Mcdeath messaged me right after you trying to get me to offer him gold so you guys could go troll us by screwing up our roster. We had 11 tkov in that battle, and were still outnumbered by 15.

Honestly, it was our dumb fault for having that shitty nightime to begin with so the veluca battles is watev, but seeing is how I've never talked to any FIDLBG buys before, or seen them around our ts before, I don't think you guys can really accuse us of things. And if you are going to start bringing accusations about us, you might want to talk to your buddy 9finger and see if he's cool with it.

Strat is dead, I don't think anyone refutes that. So dicking around with our roster isn't going to piss us off, but just ruin xp for the people who actually want it anymore.

Yo Kesh, Gondor could use some Rohan right about now.

Also, don't we have a get-a-town-back-free-from-bullshit card laying around somewhere, LCO?

General Off Topic / Looking for casual concept artist!
« on: December 10, 2013, 08:58:21 pm »
I have been working on writing a fantasy series for some time now and I am getting to a stage where I could use some concept sketches over several different areas: characters, map work, buildings, etc.

I can pay in Crpg gold/looms (pretty generously :p) as well as gifting steam games.

It is medieval themed, with several aspects inspired from my experience in crpg/strat. Many character names and little things like that are involved.

Yet it is fantasy, but not elves/ dark magic crap etc.

So really I am looking for someone willing to create/ learn "new" things as well as adapt traditional fantasy creatures/elements the way I want it.

Everything is just for concept, just to help me visualize things, so I don't need a great artist. If you are interested you can reply, pm, or add my steam: Samura1_Smurf

Part of the issue is timing. Its the last two weeks of school for most of us, and it is just to hard to find time with finals etc. So I guess if you wanted more effort from our part, maybe wait a week or two.
