cRPG Technical problems / Unable to register new account

Trying to get my friend registered as he bought Warband today on Steam.
He checks the character name, it's fine.
He logs in to an official server and plays on the character name, same casing and everything.
He then goes to the next step, inserts a website name and password and is met with the error "Character not found"
he then has to back out of the registration system and cannot use that name again because it says it already exists.
Can someone please help me out with this?
