i'm from croatia. here we fight according to "french" rules (opposed to "eastern" rules which are basically "hit him till he hits the ground" [visit battle of nations]) in which is enough to strike adversary just good enough that if he wore no armour, a blade would bite into flesh (no thrusts).
i fight for cca. 10 years now.
these are my adversaries
every one is heavier than me
almost everyone is higher than me
most of them are stronger than me
most of them have longer arms than me
my advantages are that i'm quicker than most, i have rather good footwork, and lot more stamina than most of fatties i fight against
now i'm using one old longsword made by one smith and since the new one costs around 450 usd
my household (wife, 3 kids and me) makes monthly (when we deduct rent) 360 usd so i want every cent to pay off when i buy sword. i think that it was situation in medieval times too (i think a sword was worth as 2 or 3 cows and it was not small price).
i am going to order sword that would be long to from ground to my armpit, long hilt (so i can have bigger leaver, because i like changing swings from short to long edge and vice versa), thin tapered blade (sacrificing strenght of blow for quickness and maneuverability - and balance as colse to hilt as it is possible) with rounded tip (i don't want anyone skewered, but it will move balance a bit forward) and pear shaped pommel (my left hand holds on pommel)
