Title: New PC, Odd freezes
Post by: PointBlank9 on July 06, 2011, 04:23:11 am
So a few days ago I picked up a pretty new PC, and every time probably mid-way through a game I get an odd freeze that continues the current sound at the time of the crash, and loops it over and over again very quickly. After about 5 minutes of just sitting there, it crashes to the server menu saying Connection to Server is lost. I'm not sure if this is the wireless on the new PC, or the new graphics card. I tried installing the crpg-optimization patch but it seemed to do nothing, and also I am not enabling Force Single Threading. Any suggestions?

Thanks, PB

Does it also quickly loop the same two frames over and over again? if so I have solved this by alt tabbing out then back in. Not sure what causes it though :/

Yeah it does, but it doesn't allow me to do anything. I can't alt-tab, alt-F4, can't even start up my task manager. Its just completely frozen for a good 3-5 minutes, and after it unfreezes it goes to the server list and says connection to server is lost.

Do you think I should pull my Nvidea Geforce 9400 GT out of my old PC and put it this one? The current video card is Intel HD Graphics Family (Default lol..)

Mount and Blade isn't really considered hardcore gaming haha. But do you think that is the reason for the crashes?

anything that is 3d is going to be magnitudes better when run with a dedicated 3d hard.  Yes mount'n'blade is hardcore gaming unless you want it to look like complete ass and run it in the maxed-LOW/OFF settings.

Switched out graphics card, put the 9400 GT in it, still getting same crashes.

repeat after me

update video & sound drivers
update video & sound drivers
update video & sound drivers
update video & sound drivers
update video & sound drivers
update video & sound drivers
update video & sound drivers

Windows 7 will actually list updated drivers in the 'optional' updates, which does half the work for searching for the drivers for you

I did update them, but I used the windows search feature, and they updated it for me. Should I go to the nvidea website and search from there?

yes, the nvidia site will probably almost always have the most recent.  They typically have a new version every month.  I assume you're using onboard sound, which is alot harder to find updated drivers, which is why I recommend windows update to find them.

Anyone tried the LOD pack?

Do it, fixed these freezes for me.

THats very bad, I would up to to somewhere like 30-45 minutes.

If you dont have 'load textures on demand' turned off. very time some new person has to load in and you dont have their textures loaded into video memory, it has to spin up your hard drive...which yours is off.  This can freeze the entire computer in the process.

Increase the time til HD turns off, and see how it plays.  IF that doesnt help, turn off 'load textures on demand'

I did have that setting off btw. But I will try increasing the time on that.

you might also try turning 'load textures on demand' back on.  in theory it SHOULD help, but several ppl says it makes things worse.  In theory any video card with 1GB of memory should be able to do this.

Always do things one at a time, to figure out which was the cause of the problem

Been messing around with options, seems to have gone away. Thanks for the help.

I can confirm it's not an issue with the video or audio drivers. I flashed the BIOS in an attempt to get rid of the freezes, too. But just asking in game, there's more than a handful of people complaining about the crashes that started happening after the patch and hotfix. I turned off the 'load textures on demand' setting and that fixed the issue with random FPS drops. The freezes and crashes are still there.

Running an i5 quad at 2.6.
A cheap nVidia 9800GT.
4GB RAM at 1600.
The HDD is a beast, though. Not quite sure what's up with this latest patch, but it's caused its fair share of problems.

only time you should ever flash your bios is SYSTEM related crashes or to add new features.

How many minutes til your harddrive goes into powered down mode?

I'm also assuming you guys are using onboard sound (which sucks).  Do any of you having crashes use dedicated sound cards?

Oh, I'm well aware. It was BSODs with both Warband and APB that made me flash the BIOS.

My HDDs never shut off. They're always on...so I have a feeling it isn't a HDD issue either. Especially because it's only happened after this patch, and it's happened to a number of people. The sound loops and the screen flips between two frames for about 10-30 seconds before it crashes. I suppose it's possible that I'm ignorant of an update with the patch and something it might have changed in the modules file that would make the HDD an issue, but it's never been a problem with Warband or any other application up until yesterday.

Edit: Indeed, I'm using the infamous Realtek onboard.

This happens to my PC as well, but my specs are a lot worse than yours.

Strange how it affects a lot better computer, though. o.O

And it's been happening to you JUST since the patch? Because this truly is strange.

have you tried disabling sound in Warband to see if you crash still?
