My suggestion here is pretty obvious, make items that you cannot store on your person only take up one slot. Example is a pike, a lance or even a flamberge. These are of course large weapons, but you cannot store them on your person, if you want to use a different one, you have to drop it. If you have to move, it'll mean leaving it behind.
If archers bring flamberges, they drop em to shoot and get run off, they are left without their flamberges.
Apparently the slot system is to hurt the swiss army knifer characters. Fine, this suggestion will still nerf them. No longer can you come across an archer who suddenly draws a pike or a gigantic sword from out of his ass. He might have one lying around, but he will have to go pick it up or if he has moved, he has to look for it. This means it gives the attacker an advantage over the swiss army knife player. At the same time, it will make these kind of classes less mobile. An archer can now bring a pike, but he has to stay around it, or pick it up and carry it with him. This makes him much less mobile compared to those that are carrying a sheathable melee weapon instead. Maybe it would lead to more camping, maybe it would lead to more realistic playing? I can't tell, might be cool to see though.
This may seem unfair to polearms I admit, IRL you can strap a pretty large sword to yourself, but polearms are usually a bit longer.

Nah. This will just lead to all archers carrying long weapons and storing them on the ground while shooting. The current system is definitely better.

You, good sir, have been Ninjaed.

Haha, run from a guy with a flamberge, he just shoots you, and picks it back up.

Stationary archer is a dead archer. Not to mention the risk of having someone else take the weapon would be a big one. I doubt many archers would use them. This would mostly benefit infantry who start off with a pike or some other spear and then switch to bec or something.

That is not true, especially in groups. Archers tend to move in groups. Or camp. And not only would I be willing to bet against that second statement, but even one archer carrying a flamberge with his bow and double stack of arrows is obnoxious and unintended.

Which can and does already happen.

I don't have enough time to heirloom my weapons. If you leave a good weapon on the ground I WILL take it.
Also, the picking up speed is slow: and archer that was pointing at a charging guy and trying to do archery things will have to find the weapon on the ground, point accurately to get the pickup label and hit F, then there is a drawing animation and he can start fighting from a stand still. If the archer is willing to spend 2-3 seconds to get his melee weapon from the ground instead of shooting me from 5 meters range, I heartily accept the tradeoff.

Good idea, though then you can have a poleaxe, shield, lance combi on horseback again. But i like it. +1!

It gets a problem with cav.
Suddenly they can have both lance, large shields and sword. No, no no.
so def.

This. A pole/1h cav should take a horseman shield.
-
Cav can take bigger swords as well as shield and lances..
-
well, small shield + lance and one big sword, perhaps more of the bigger swords shouldnt be useable on horseback? I know my danish great isnt. Same for non-horsemen shield?

The poleaxes should be unsheathable.

The way to solve the large shields issue is to make them unusable from horseback, not to mess with the number of slots they take. If they should be able to be used on horses they I do not see the problem. Lance+cav shield+1H is a perfectly reasonable setup isn't it? I am one of the largest horse eaters... I mean haters.
