Title: No Trees/Bushes texture mod
Post by: Gorath on June 27, 2011, 07:06:32 am
So I've recently discovered that many many people have either altered their texture files by deleting the textures for foilage so they don't get blinded by it when fighting (no tree to obscure your view) or have d/led a mod file for warband that does this.

This is gay.

That is all.

yeah it makes ranged much easier
I think it shouldn't be allowed although I doubt there is a method of monitoring it

This is gay.

What!? Where's the fun in that! I love firing blind into a bush and headshotting someone

I replaced all my textures with ASCII. When I play my screen looks like the monitors in the Matrix, but the frame rate is maxed.

Seriously though, I wonder how many have transparent textures that allow them to see through walls. Sometimes I follow players and they always seem to know what is around the bend.

Think TeamSpeak is to blame for that in most situations.

Also, nerf lower graphics settings. I play on everything maxed with Realistic Colors mod. Had a friend over playing on a laptop with realy low settings, looked over on his screen, no bushes or foliage the cheater!

Oh.... So THAT'S why they always see us ninjas.

In any case. Sounds a little excessive, but I s'pose they need the edge if they're that desperate.

Personally, I play with the realistic textures mod that I believe actually made some of the bushes bigger. Also made weapons harder to see because the ground, trees and bushes have a grey tone over them.

I always say that if you can't kill with style, you might aswell not kill at all.

PS. I have a hard time speaking of bushes with a straight face.

When people delete these files, does it make them invisible or gone? I assume they are just invisible since I've never seen anyone walk through trees. Doesn't it make it hard to move around on maps with a lot of trees?

Also, whats the difference between this and admins using the show names cheat?

its probably more of just fucking with the alpha channel to make shit like foliage invisible. the bounding/clipping meshes are still gonna be there I imagine.

Invisible, not gone.  The model is still there, just transparent.  I haven't bothered to test it because I trust the people that were telling me about it.  Just had to vent about how lame I think it is.   :|

I'm with gorath.

Using mods like the dead tree mod should be a bannable offense in my opinion.

Theres no way to admin that.  I don't think anyone can do anything about it.

A human admin? No, not humanly possible.

A program that scans texture files and reports missing ones? Easily.

I was considering a no foliage pack so that i could get better fps.
trees murder FPS in this game because of the resources it takes to render the leaves for some god awful reason.

It should be done.
Lowering the graphics option can already give an edge on some more "realistic play" people, but this is just TOO much.

I like to hide in a bush/hay without being lanced in the head by some cheaters (yes I said it).

What ? So that's why my dedicated bushman in green couldn't ninja effectively !

Lame, really lame. Bushes add to the mod, it shouldn't be removed.

I love it when people do that! It always ends in an awesome way. Ether I saw them run into hiding and can surprise couch them or I ride past on my merry way and goes "OMFG highwayman!" Dying to that is never annoying since it's a) hillarious, b) actually my fault and c) totally awesome  8-)

People who use any transparent texture mods loses a lot of the fun in this game, sneaking around and countersneaking. I love doing that :D

I changed the katana texture into bright shining pink so I can spot the ninjas from a mile away. Next I will turn the black ninja armor to brightly colored flowers pattern - makes them look gay AND easier to spot :D

Makes me think about people who also changed the color of their blts/arrows so that they could more easily find them on the floor, and see where they shoot. Clearly a big advantage against common people.

Just make it that changing ANYTHING from the standart (+ some mods) textures kicks you out from the game.

If you need to remove trees/bushes to be good in this game you probably suck hard.

I *would* be cool with this, except for the fact that I currently run the Realistic Colors mod, Blood Enhancement mod, More Metal Sounds, and Sounds of Suffer mod, all of which would get me kicked.

Unless by "+ some mods" you meant to say "Minus some mods," in which case I'm fine with it.

I, of course, counted the mods as standarts textures, that you can have.
Would be a shame if implemented add-on textures mods wouldn't be allowed.

That's cool, misread you a bit there before then. But still, I feel like it would be difficult for any code in the mod to differentiate between default textures and modded ones, seeing as they use the same filenames most times. The ones that don't have edited lines in module.ini and in the textures text file. So to properly catch illegal modding you'd have to set it up to look for differences in textures by filesize maybe? But then all the cheat-modders would have to do is insert X kilobytes worth of junk data into a blank texture and make it match.

Honestly, I think its a bit too complicated an issue for any moddable game to handle. Games like Battlefield and Call of Duty can't catch texture/smoke/foliage removal packs, I don't expect this game to either. We just have to rely on the community not to be cheating douche-swallowers.

matrix is in binary i believe.....

It should be, but it's not. Just loads of unicode characters iirc.

It's actually quite easy to tell wether someone has the same texture files as you want them to have. Hash the correct texture file and hardcode the result, then compare this model with the hash of the corresponding file on the local computer. Before that, make sure you got the correct file names by checking the resource listing files. But I really don't know how to force someone to run the verification program without hacking into TW's exe.

This protection would be fairly thin against any real hacker, but at least not everybody could simply replace the textures with void ones.
