Project Zomboid, a survival zombie RPG currently in pre-alpha. It has crafting, barricading, weapons, zombies, npcs, scavenging, etc...

Features:

You can try it out for free:

1 day 6 hours, i set my house on fire :D

Haha, common mistake :D
Oven is a hoax, you can just eat the soup. Put it in the oven and turn on and off in a few seconds.

My record is 2 days on third try, somehow I thought it was a good idea to go roaming the streets at night and I aggroed a whole zerg that ate me.

3 days 22 hours.

It was fun at first, but it got boring quickly - dunno if it can get complex enough to really be longterm fun.

Hm yes, they certainly need to add more stuff, make more use of the sandbox concept.

UPDATE: Smothered wife with pillow, ran to a tall apartment building, got severe leg injury on the way, barricaded at top floor then died 8 days later to leg injury :D

1 day, 3 hours.

Oven cought on fire while cooking. I tried to put it out, became living torch, ran up and tried to carry the woman to safety, but she died from the human torch carrying her. I run downstairs again and I had forgotten to close the front door, tons of zombies.

If there's a real zombie apocalypse I'll just shoot myself at the start of it and get it over with.

So I found myself a nice place to stay in the woods after sitting in the starting house's bathroom for a couple of days.
It was very easy to defend, when a small group and starts hitting my door I just hit them from the window with my baseball bat.

Fast forward a few days and I have made myself a spiked-bat, gathered lots of food and random supplies which I stored in the crates, things were going swell.
I notice a lack of wooden boards so I went ahead and broke into a warehouse, and found a decent number of planks (8.)

When I back to my cabin and had a good night's sleep however, as I woke up in the middle of the night my cabin was surrounded by the largest horde I have ever seen, me hitting them by the windows didn't get rid of them fast enough, and I couldn't keep barricading it forever.
Eventually the first door fell before I was able to reach it, I stand in the doorway armed with my trusty shotgun repelling them until the second door inevitably comes crashing down.

At this point however I realized that all hope is lost, if I'm going to die I'm taking these fuckers down with me.

I scramble to the wardrobe, dangerously close to the second broken down door, and find lighters and whiskey bottle, quickly downing them I run around disoriented and shooting whatever I can, I find the crate with the fuel cans.
Making a large stash of molotovs and armed with my trusty lighters, I started throwing.

Trapped in my now burning cabin, I lie on the floor exhausted and bleeding with severe injuries, I was also 'shit-faced' but that stopped the pain. It was not long until I succumbed to darkness.

(click to show/hide)

Welp, that was pretty good for my first game.

Lovely story :)

Btw, I was a bit confused when I was trying to make a molotov. What do you need to make one?

Just bought it, hope they put that money to some use (It's nothing anyway :)).

I have finally figured out what will be the biggest gameplay problem of it all:

The food/equipment raids itself are awesome, tense, etc.
What really is problematic is your safehouse: if you need nothing (got enough food, etc), you will be bored to death there. I hope they figure out a way of giving that some fun, too.

Either way, I imagine coop will be a blast.

Post by: Vibe on June 23, 2011, 08:45:25 am
I can already see how fun coop will be.
On the other hand, survival now is just camping a good spot for days until you run out of food, then you do the grocery/shop run to restock and back to camping.
Well, I was busy tending to my leg while hiding in my apartment the last run, so it was kind of like playing leg tamagochi meanwhile.

Also, they are adding this next patch:

I played a bit with the demo, it was fun and i was taken by the game, it looks promising with lots of potential, there should be plenty to do.

I really played a little, I have a "azerty" keyboard and it is not practical, maybe I buy it (if it is possible to configure the controls!?)

If food is all you have to worry about in a zombie survival game you are winning. :P

I've been following this game for a little while and am glad to see its early success, can't wait to see where they will take it.

Try to tweak your taskbar a bit if its not already there.

I wonder why the game thinks I want to smother my wife with a pillow. Perhaps I was trying to put it under her head? What a dark scenario. I felt bad when she said those last words.

Hm, I wanted to start playing, so I got that far:

How did I do that? Rescued my wife, set the house on fire, got tons of food and stuff and survived as long in the house as I didn't have any food. Didn't want to go out once more cause I was afraid of the zombies and didn't want to let ms. Smith alone. Also I plundered some houses around so there was no food left anyway, or too far away in other houses:

hint: only go out at night so you can just walk past the zombies, they wont see you. I only fought 4 zombies at all, with a hammer. Didn't have a shotgun, cause if you shoot a lot more will come.

Edit: does anybody know the difference between the demo and full version?
Title: Re: Project Zomboid

There is no difference between demo and full currently, but full version will get all the updates, whereas the demo won't, in the future. Also, co-op is planned to be added in the game. :)

They have done lots of stuff, updates take some time. They have 9 tasks left to do, check the forums.

Also, I started mapping and modding the game. I'm currently creating a custom story :)

Bought this game back last summer, quite liked it. After a while it became just dull though. Few months back remembered this game and thought I'd give it a second try, after all there must be like dozens of patches and fixes since last try. I was staggered when I found they haven't managed to get single patch out since then.

Post by: Count_Curtis on February 08, 2012, 01:27:31 pm
The guys who make the game work off 2 laptops, they had the patch near complete, then the laptops got robbed.
so, they are having to make the patch again, which i cant imagine to be too fun

Title: Re: Project Zomboid
Post by: chadz on February 08, 2012, 01:38:05 pm
According to their story, their laptops were taken and an entire week of code was gone. That's why the patch was delayed.

After 3 months, there still is no patch.

I had high hopes in the beginning, but at this rate, it won't go anywhere great. And with this "we got robbed" story they raised the bullshit-o-meter of many people quite radically.

I was hoping for a game with regular small fixes, like TW did in the beginning. That was actually what they promised.

looks nice. btw, how long is a day ingame in real time?

One in game day goes by really fast, but that is gonna change as soon as there is more to do in the game.

Also, I don't get why you guys hate on the game so much, bad things do happen in this world and they had a few setbacks. Recent blog posts are proof of their work and the game will be taken to a next level within the next 1 or 2 months.

Since most of you guys bought the game already anyway, you got nothing to loose.

It's really worth it and until the update hits, you can check all the mods. There are lots of story mods to keep you entertained and map mods (mine included).

I  tried it but I didnt even grasp how I could get out the fucking house?I mean its on the second floor and there are seemingly not even stairs down...

But I think, in full game with all the features and maybe a good tutorial, this has the potential to become an A+ game.
Title: Re: Project Zomboid
Post by: Renay on February 08, 2012, 03:47:53 pm
The stairs are where the floor is missing.

About the oven, turn it off before you go upstairs to Kate.
Title: Re: Project Zomboid
Post by: Renay on February 08, 2012, 03:50:54 pm
That's weird, I checked the script. The oven shouldn't catch fire unless you are upstairs and left the oven on. And it only starts after the radio message has been broadcast and Kate says "You smell burning?".
Title: Re: Project Zomboid
Post by: Renay on February 08, 2012, 04:08:19 pm
Do you walk upstairs when Kate starts talking?

Shouldn't be possible for the oven to catch fire otherwise, the script that sets the oven on fire requires the player being upstairs.
Title: Re: Project Zomboid
Post by: Renay on February 08, 2012, 04:15:49 pm
Try turning the oven off as soon as Kate starts talking and then take the soup out of it.

Gotta go to work now, if it still doesn't work, I'll change the script for you this evening. Maybe if it's ready, you can test my custom Story by then.
Title: Re: Project Zomboid
Post by: Overdriven on February 08, 2012, 04:39:09 pm
The soup cooks WAY before Kate starts talking. There's no need to leave it on that long

Mine also set on fire as soon as she said 'you smell burning'. But I tried again and it cooks long before that.

If not, let me know which version you are using and send me the script somehow.
Title: Re: Project Zomboid
Post by: Renay on February 08, 2012, 11:25:44 pm
Hahaha, yeah the first time playing shows you how easy you die in this game.

Hide from the Raider in the upper floor second bedroom. Once you see the door of Kates room opening, rush in there and beat him down with your hammer.
Title: Re: Project Zomboid
Post by: Renay on February 08, 2012, 11:40:08 pm
I could also check how often he attacks the player in the script, I don't think it plays on a loop. In another story I just counted the shots and then beat him to death. Also, the raider only has 20 shells, so if you manage to make him 20 times, you can beat him too xD

11 days 14 hours is my best so far. Largely because I simply got bored...I had enough stuff stashed to keep me going so I decided to suicide charge the zombies

Personally I think it'll be better when it has co-op. I never set myself on fire because I had a heads-up here and I was able to bludgeon the bloke with the shotgun to death before he even saw me because I hid behind the door to my wifes room.

I managed something along the lines of 2 days roughly because I got lost outside.

Title: Re: Project Zomboid

Now I tried it too, and I am disappoint, son.

The game doesn't even tell me how I can eat the fucking apple in my inventory. And it doesn't tell me what those two round fields are representing, where I can equip stuff. If I didn't watch a youtube video I wouldn't even manage to barricade the windows. And I still didn't find out how to kill zombies with a hammer.

Really, either the tutorial needs a few more explanations, or they need to rework their entire inventory and menu system dramatically.  :?

Of course, but this is something that basic that releasing a demo, never mind how early it is, without explaining HOW YOU CAN EAT is totally pointless.

Btw. I thought that with my post above I made it clear what I want, but now I will rephrase it:

How can I eat in this game?

Now I tried it again, and it did work.

The last time I tried it nothing happened. My girlfriend was sitting right next to me, and I just asked her, she also remembered that we tried it this way. I guess it was some kind of bug, perhaps, the game is in an early stage, so that can happen very well.
