OK reposting this from the taleworlds board because I keep forgetting this one exists. Anyway:
chadz, why not just put time limits on item usage instead if you don't want everyone running around in plate with flamberges. Then people don't need to worry about cash flow and can still buy new shiny things. Think of the time limits as 'down tme' while the item is being maintained, 'cept it doesn't cost anything. For heirlooming perhaps because the items are higher quality, the time you can use them for increases a bit and the repair time doesn't change.
So say you wear your plate for 5 rounds. After that its bound to be damaged so its sent off to be repaired for say 7 rounds. The time it takes should be proportional to item cost. In the meantime you have to wear something else. The mid tier items would be like 5/5 rounds or something and low tier 5/3 etc.
This would force people to go through a full rota of items and keep the mix up. People will still be able to have their plate/horse/flamberge and afford it because they won't be losing gold. It also favours grinders even less, since its time dependant it doesn't matter how stupid an amount of gold you have saved you don't use it to pay for repairs.
Thoughts?

nice in theory but I see people just grinding to three of the best sets and then switching them out, making it a tin can game again.

Stupid, people would alternate between black, gothic and milanese using spamberge, cookies, tears ridding plated charger, mamluke and charger. Again, stupid. And involve no meaningful choice.

I have different idea
now we can have all the items damaged in one round, even if our team win the battle and we were not doing anything (nor hit or being hitted)
if we don't get hit, why our armor can be damaged?
list of damagable items shouldn't contain parts of armor that weren't hited that round or weapons that we were not hit anybody
edit:
why? because we have 4 wepon slots, even if we are using only one weapon all 4 can be damaged, it's annoying

Well maybe the repair time should be more than triple wear time for these then :P
Oh well I tried... Well I didn't really, spur of the moment idea.

No, the current upkeep system is better. If I want to wear plate 20 rounds in a row as I afford losing 20-30k, why not let me?
-
While I don't think that the upkeep system is a bad idea, I do feel that the higher tiered weapons and armour should come with more downsides. The heavier armours should come at a larger trade-off of mobility, accuracy, and so forth due to their extreme protection values. Better item balance would negate the need for upkeep all together since each peice of equipment would have true purpose rather than simply act as stepping stones.

Bad. I feel that current upkeep system is good, just item balance need to be sorted. High tier items just need to pay premium for the awesomness.

Agreed. Current system is fine. Longer you wear better armor, more to repair.

How is this bad? Explain
