After not having an AU server for ages we finally have a working one and the community has come back alive. Huzzah.
I have spotted that being a cav build pretty much forces you to go a 1H build.
Why?
I am a 2H build at the moment.
I carry 2H sword + Lance = 4 slots.
I would be far more able if I had the ability to carry shield. But I can't.
Compare:
Now if I was a 1H build I could do this:
Carry 1H sword + shield + lance = 4 slots = survive a lot longer, if shot, if couched, if attacked. etc.
I think the lances need to be one slot. It's already horrible you can't sheathe them. At least make them 1 slot so 2h/polearm builds can carry a shield. Otherwise you are giving 1h build cav's a superior advantage when riding and when they fall off (consider when your horse dies, you can immediately shield up and stop the 2-3 arrows going for you and live versus the other two classes die.
Summary: Change lances to be 1 slot otherwise 1H build's get a far superior advantage being able to couche + hold a shield versus polearm/2h can't.

No.

Hi i am also an AU player PK_Owens or the infamous OP_jumping_bean. Bean is a 2H cav build. I use the langes messer a 1H with a secondary mode it only takes 1 slot. It is powerful and fast but expensive being only one slot it frees up my item selection i can use a sword lance and shield with out any issues. This is a good solution to your problem

Pretty much this. Another solution is using some of the 1 slot ideas. I find the quarter staff to be a great ground weapon, and I've also seen the short spear work well

Behold, ye hath discovered the purpose of yon slot restrictions

Unsheathable weapons should be 1 slot. Maybe board shields and and huscarl shields should be 2 slot. I think it is realistic and fair for a cav player to have a smallish shield, lance, and 2H. The lance and shield is the cav build, the 2H is the unhorsed weapon; makes sense.

This would only be balanced if it applied to all unsheathable weapons, including the pike.
-
Yeah its definitely fair cav can hold a small shield.
Already have all couchable weapons unsheathable let us hold a shield, even if its 50 HP... I like above suggestion for super shields to be two slots and lances 1 slot
-
You choose your build for its positives. You also have to live with its negatives. If you want a shield, choose a weapon set that accommodates that desire. Get a Langes Messer and deal with it being 1 hand WPF with that shield you wanted. You STILL get to use it 2 handed when you drop the shield.
-
it happened to all classes, no reason for cav to be be different
-
lol the slot system works perfect here: no more xbowshooting 2h sword carrying lance riders overkill u...cav is supposted to only carry a 1 slot shield + lance and 1h or a 1 slot bow with 2 arrows and a 1h wep for HAs it works very good. slot balance brought most balance to game...it works fine dont cry about it its saturday and every one had to change and overthink his equip after slot system was intodruced not only that you Danath...
-
Make the bastard swords 1 slot at least someone
Katana is carried as a 1h why is it 2 slot etc. Also cav got affected the most with this slot thing not anyone else. Cav = cav + melee fighter when knocked off. Has to be two things, needs the slots.
-
Cav one: Heavy Lance, Shashka, Knightly Kite Shield.
Cav Two: Heavy Lance, Polearm backup.
My first one has survivability, the second one that works even better has less survivability (and the 4 shield skill now looks kinda stupid with the new patch), , but honestly has the tradeoff of a very nice melee capability.
I am ok with this. Cavalry does not need more slots, just choose your role.
-
What's the problem here?
If you want to carry a 2h/Polearm in your back while lancing, just.. bring it.
That low skill shield is useless anyway, I adjusted my playstyle by not relying on the low-shield. And it worked for me.
Also it was slowing me down all the time, Good Riddance, I say!
-
cavalry is the most balanced class in the game, dont change it

low shield skill is useless? I disagree. With 3 shield skill, I rarely ever get shot on that character. I honestly don't think there's a point to high shield skill.

steel shield :D

I like the Elite Cavalry shield, so I need 4 not 3 now with the new patch to make me happy... Shields are nice though even at 3.

I really can't say there was a times which I would pick a steel shield over my elite cavalry shield. My shield rarely breaks, and when it does, just manual block. Arrows never break my shield by themselves, so that's not a big problem either... and throwing is nerfed to hell so I never run into throwers anymore.

Well, 3 shield skill is decent for someone who is a cav.
LOW shield skill is 1-2.

Gotcha Christo.
To be honest, I think most archers are deterred by the simple fact of someone pulling out a shield of any quality. Sometimes on my polearm character (not a cavalry character this generation) archers stop firing at me and go for an easy character... and I will only be using an old heater shield.
A smart archer can tell the difference and play smart, shooting a low shield skiller's toes, but a lot of people can't tell the difference between a higher quality shield and a piece of trash.
-
If u fear that much archers, bring ur lance + shield and a quartestaff as backup, if ur like me and u prefer a more agressive set of weapons: drop the shield and take wtv polearm fits u best when meleeing. Hell, u can even be using the fckin "bec de corbad" or polaxes! Look at Noobie_ATS! One of the best if not THE best NA lancer cav! He's toping chart with a K/D ratio of 10++ frequently and he's normally using light lance and a "lawl pike" so he never has a shield... 8-)
-
How are these cavalry builds innately unfair and/or unrealistic (I say "innately" because gold cost/skill system is alterable, so the current "balance" situation is not necessarily permanent)?
Lance (unsheathable 1 slot), shield, 1H, 1 stack of throwing weapons
Lance (as above), shield, great sword
Lance (...), shield, 2 stacks f throwing weapons
Lance (...), shield, crossbow, 1 stack of ammo
Lance (...), shield, sheathable polearm (2 slots)
Lance (...), bow, 2 stacks of ammo
Lance (...), crossbow, 2 stacks of ammo
I don't see what is wrong with these builds at all. They all have strengths and shortcomings. When you hybrid ranged and melee, you waste specialist potential and the more stuff you take the more you have to pay in repairs.
-
ArchonForgotYourName half those builds can't be done.
Great sword = two slots for example. Lance = two slots.
Perhaps read the thread next time eh?
Also the guy above who says shields arent that good I lol'd.
A skill shield of 2 will get you a nice 300hp+ shield (forgot which norman maybe) that will take quite a few hits and cover you very well. EXCELLENT for suvivability, even an old heater shield will deflect those 5 arrows when your knocked off your horse and let you survive.
-
tbh, i would suggest making the lances one slot weapons, since they can't be sheathed, at any time you have them in your hand, and if you select a different weapon, you must drop the lance.

Your joking right ?
You don't need a shield at all as a cav. That way you can have a heavy lance + a spam polearm (somewhere between the LHB and the elegant poleaxe), have only one weapon proficiency, still be very effective on foot and be the best possible build on a horse.
Lances cannot be sheathed, that's exactly what makes 1h cav a nightmare to play. You can hardly survive any cav vs cav combat. Lancers don't care about this limitation since they don't use anything else than their lance on horse. When they are dehorsed they take their spam polearm an drop the heavy lance, they don't need it anymore anyway.

What Kafein said +1. i played cav before and theres maybe 2 or 3 HA players in NA that can give me a hard time with no shield.
On another note, get used to slot system Danath, its there and wont change. Im lancer myself and i dont have any problem with it. If u desperatly need a shield then you'll have to sacrifice something to get one slot. If ur 2hander, bring a spiked mace, if ur lance/polearm bring a quarterstaff. Its that easy.
I lol'ed at how you try to buff ur class. If u get what you want ull see other threads like "make my longbow 1 slot already!" and we will be back pre patch with hybrids with longbow and danish greatsword or 2handers with danish gs and an arbalest, etc.

Epic noob statement I lol'd

I'm not complaining its "hard" I kick-ass as a cav with or without a shield. I'll reiterate:
Cav is biased more towards 1H builds because you are more advantaged as a lancer, and when you get knocked off, your still ready to roll (and have a shield to block those precious few seconds of arrow fire).
Same can't be said for 2h and polearm builds. Hence make lances 1 slot so these guys can hold a shield when they cav so the 1H builds aren't at an advantage when mounted.
-
Danath i do agree with you that a shield is essential for a consistently good show as cav. Although i disagree about lances only taking 1 slot they should take 2. It forces cav players to use hybrid weapons or to not use lances. I am by no means skilled at fighting horses when on horse back, most of my kills are against overconfident infantry and stupid ass bowmen. I have zero polearm skill and only 50 1H skill yet my langes messer in 1H mode is 80% of my kills. Cav does not need a buff.
Since going cav I have got 300 kills to 100 deaths :D and i am only an average player it seems cav is balanced to me.
-
I am confused, epic noob statement that you don't need a shield as a cav, yet the next breathe you say you kick ass with or without, and then the next post a guy saying "I agree you need a shield."
Which is it? :/
-
Epic noob statement I lol'd
I disagree. I rarely use my shield on my cav. I don't need it half the time, and I do just fine without it. A shield is nice, but its only an arrow catcher. Most archers aim for my horse rather than me anyway.
When you say things like "epic noob statement" about a legitimate style of play, you really make yourself look like a noob yourself. Shields work well with cav because 1h aren't penalized on horseback and lances can be used with shields. Most cav on the NA currently do not use shields. I can only think of a few that still use them to date.

remove cavalry, the problem will be solved..
