best 1h in your opinion? 8-)
i'd say nord champion
-
Niuweidao
-
Depends. Steel pick is a beast for close combat whereas the Italian sword is extremely versatile and pretty.
-
Italian Sword ftw. It has nice stats and really good looks
-
I love my knightly arming sword and broad one handed battle axe.
-
The Shashka, without a doubt, is the best one hander. It's got great length, decent speed, decent damage and is great from foot and from horseback. It also looks awesome and is a fantastic budget weapon. Just feint left to overhead and you'll tear through everyone but the most armored tin cans.
-
Scimitar(normal one) is my favourite cheap, fast and decent damage and no thrust.
-
Military Cleaver is cool, best damages for good lenght, and the look is scary awesome!!
-
Italian Sword is what I use, just for the looks to be honest. When I think if a sword, then the first thing that comes to mind is something very similar to that one. Just beautiful ( and quite strong too, actually ).
-
I'm in love with the leet scimitar, but it has problems fighting against tin cans pack.
Iberian mace comes second
-
Long espada eslanova-o-doom and long arming sword <3
-
nice to see so many different opinions in here instead of the 'Sidesword is best...' :)
im on the military cleaver; great damage, nice speed and fine length
-

Not after paul gets hes way you will no longer need peirce of blunt to fight tin cans we can soon just stick to our spamitars
-
I love my Long Espada Eslavona as it deals decent thrust and swing damage...it is quite expensive when repairing but the thrust damage is worth the money imo. But it was much better before the last nerf, now it has to be heirloomed
-
Long Esapada has a surprising reach.
-
I love warhammer. Nice blunt damage, and knockdown.
-

It has great reach but I find it more predictable than the Italian Sword. But perhaps that's just me/my screen dimensions.

I miss its old stats :(

Same for me, and before Italian weapon I played with Arming Swords, and now on horse I prefer Long Arming Sword, I don't like nords swords even if they are better. On foot I like a sword with 99/95 speed/length with a good thrust damage.
-
Wow, I never realized that the Italian Sword was so popular.
-
the simple sword
because its cheap and has good enough stats for me :D
-
Without going into the murky realms of "best", I'm going to just say that my favorite 1hander to use is the Iberian Mace. Blunt damage and knockdown. It's my melee weapon of choice for my foot archer, and it's hilarious how many people underestimate it in my hands.
-
steel pick.
-
Pick is the best.
-
Pick for 2H sword-in-one-hand power.
Langes Messer for overall efficiency (Elite Scimitar if you suck at thrusting).
Nordic Short Sword for spam mode.
-
langes messer
-
Hammer for Archers / xbowmen, gatta love the 0 slot offhand weapon.
-

yeah a +3 pick do almost the morningstar damage with more speed, lighter weight, not unbalanced, 1 slot required, less str requirement.
only drawback is short. but 99 speed for a 36p weapon with the shield in the other hand, is priceless.
will be nerfed soon imo. when fasader will see how much people use it, will ( ) tweak it.

Not 99, 100speed
-
There are lots of 1 handers that suit different play styles. Find one you like and find the best stats for the price that you can.
-
I've had a Flanged Mace for awhile, it's my backup weapon to the German GSword. Good for close-up work, like in a shieldwall at the flag or a chokepoint.
-
knightly arming, broad one handed battle axe and the warhammer thats the 1h to go
-
My favorite is probably the Italian sword as others had mentioned. It has good damage speed and reach for it's cost. Lots of other 1-handers can improve upon it in some way, but it's an excellent 'all around er'.
-
LEET SCHIMI ferrr suree
-
Crush their shields with the Broad One Handed Battle Axe and warhammer them into the ground! :D

I'm genuinely curious: why do people take the elite scimitar over the regular? Elite has 2 more cut and 3 more length, but 2 less speed and nearly double the price of the regular. Frankly I feel like the regular is way better. Both are still great weapons though.
Scimitar
weapon length: 97
weight: 1.3
difficulty: 10
speed rating: 101
thrust damage: 0 pierce
swing damage: 30 cut
slots: 1
Cost: 4394
Elite Scimitar
weapon length: 100 (+3)
weight: 1.3
difficulty: 11 (+1)
speed rating: 99 (-2)
thrust damage: 0 pierce
swing damage: 32 cut (+2)
slots: 1
Cost: 8116 (+3722)

Lenght and damage. Those two extra damage points prevents more bounces than one would think. That's also why heirloomed 1h swords makes such a big difference compaired to non loomed ones. :(

To me those two stats are huge in my gameplay and the speed is 100 for me since mine is heirloomed!
-
My one handed uses the 1337 spamitar and it is my favorite, I never like thrusts anyhow and the reach and damage are what does it for me, against the str builds I can dance and use right swings(good range, and of couurse the left swing and especially overhead are almost always headshots
Its not heirloomed, but even with seven PS I can break people off
Also looks appropriate with Arab gear, which I have an overall preference for.
-
I liek the side-sword- it's pwetty! In all seriousness though, I do like using the side-sword from horseback, with a kaftan, makes me feel so civilised.
-
Steel pick :)
-
hmm tough call. It took me a bit of getting used to the 85 reach on my Grosse Messer... but I really like it now. lotsa cut, lotsa speed... and it looks better than all the others! closest you can get to a cutlass! The broad one handed battle axe is also full of win.
-
Langes Messer.
Gotta love that savage looking hard hitting 1hander with a thrust attack to boot!
-
Yep, Matey can show you how to use a broad one handed battle axe! Good weapon... destroys shields w/ lots of damage.
Tactical use is most important with any 1 hander though.
*I use the knightly arming sword for flexibility.
-
I'm not a dedicated 1h user, but the Italian Sword is just beautiful..
Also, I love these.. "All-round" type weapons. It can do almost everything.
-
Wtf? Do these diverse answers imply that the item balancers did a good job for once?

as i said; yes
but i think you would get a similar result with polearms and 2H's (just not as diverse as this though)

Yep.
-
Long espada eslanova-o-doom
I just noticed bob, we share a-lot of similarities, we both have MW long espeda and we both love it :D
-

agreed Paul, that's right, you do the best, and some of us may call you crappy, you may have made some mistake, but it's a real hard work to balance things, it needs to have a general point of view, and it needs to refrain your personnal preferences.

Paul never make mistakes. Though it must be hard to be perfect when there's so many mistakers around him!

This is my first character who is approaching first retirement and I'm really struggling with my "favorite" 1H sword -- in particular which to heirloom.
It was Italian Sword for most of the way, great blend of speed and reach, but I just started trying out some of the other weapons.
In particular I've been sorta liking the Grosse Messer (I tried it after seeing Cascade using it). The +4 cut damage difference between it and the Italian Sword seems to make a HUGE difference in terms of how many hits needed to get a kill. Though the reach does take some getting used to.
The Elite Scimitar is nice too, but it seems to take longer to hit the target than the other two...or maybe I'm just not yet used to it.
At Masterwork level is there a noticeable difference between the swords? Are there better options if I generally like these two/three weapons?
MW Italian Sword
Speed: 100
Length: 98
26 Pierce
33 Cut
MW Grosse Messer
Speed: 100
Length: 85
21 Pierce
37 Cut
MW Elite Scimitar
Speed: 100
Length: 100
0 Pierce
35 Cut
Any help or recommendations appreciated!

The difference is noticeable but certainly a matter of preference. Most players with any of those masterwork weapons rarely pick up any one of the others. The only weapon which seems to stand triumphant above the rest is the MW long espada, but then again it's pretty expensive and a comparatively boring weapon. If we want to overly simplify would could push them into some niches:
Gross Messer - devastating close combat infantry sword
Elite Scimitar - cavalry sword, off-hand weapon for bowmen, supporting sword
Italian Sword - somewhere in-between the other two without significantly out-doing either of the them except in terms of versatility
Long Espada - cavalry sword, close combat sword, anti-tin can sword, anti-horse sword, nice off-hand weapon for bowmen, supporting sword
It used to be that the disparity between non-side sword/long espada's and the top two swords was so great that almost everyone used one of the top two. Now the devs seem to have struck a fine balance which affords far more interesting diversity. I'm happy about it :D
EDIT for new post: Kan I find it's a good weapon but not long enough for a pure cutter. Perhaps I'm just inexperienced with it.
-
I change my vote to Nordic champion, the length of 102 really seems to help, speed @ 97is faster than most any polearm/2h, and it has good cut and usable thrust
-
i prefer the elite scimitar, just because it can be used very well from horseback, it's long, fast and it does a lot of damage. i really don't understand why people take a sword that has good thrust damage, with 2handers i can get it, but with onehanders? explain it to mehhh!!!
-
Long espada and espada trust both do far more damage than the 2 handers can do, makes them the perfect weapon for 1 shotting.

The 1h thrust serves 3 main uses:
1) improves capacity to feint (4 moves rather than 3)
2) it can be a great tin can opener
3) allows for some excellent anti-cav maneuvers

Actually, many inexperienced 2h underestimate the reach of a 102 cm 1h stab. You can usually backpedal a bit, then suddenly start forward and do a stab, and you will even hit them if they had a swing prepared. Then follow it up with an overhead, and if they had light armor, they are dead. It's also good for when 2 ppl follow you, one bashing on your shield, the other following a step behind. Just after you blocked a hit of the closer one, start forward and stab his companion.
Stabbing also works close on if you use the rotation trick some polearmers rely on.
This is why I prefer weapons with a decent stab. I currently use a Knightly Arming Sword and am very content with it.
But every player has his own preference, so I suggest you test some more weapons, like the Arabian Cavalry sword (surprising range when slashing right to left) or the Military cleaver (high damage).
Also try out axes and hammers. Knockdown is pretty useful, as is bonus against shields.

It's shorter than many, has a strong cut but generally par speed, a high difficultly, and all that for high cut damage? I've never really seen the appeal.
-
How much damage does the Langes Messer do in 2-hand mode, anyway?
-
+2 damage in thrust and swing
-
The italion falchion is a surprising critter, decent swing damage, fast, but very limited range. And if the practice sword had a few more damage points in swing, it would be a force to be reckoned with.

nah there are better swords but i used it since i bought the game and switched to crpg, (some months, i think was at haloween steam sale not sure), my first character was 1hand with the langes messer, it looks damn nice and its fine, and the topic is in your opinion, so it musnt be the best sword

Masterwork Military Cleaver
weapon length: 92
weight: 2.5
difficulty: 14
speed rating: 97
weapon length: 92
thrust damage: 0 pierce
swing damage: 38 cut
slots: 1
38 cut makes this one a mean bugger.
-
i like the iberian mace. 3 less blunt damage than the warhammer, but 6 more length and no shitty thrust. plus it's just got style :P
