Tindel didnt want to play the game with only 10-20 people online. I wish we had 10 people online.

Give it a couple years Asheram and we will have fast enough internet that NA can play on EU servers full time and enjoy our numerous strong population.

been saying for years that we need crowdfunding to secure an artificial island located in the middle atlantic, whose only purpose is to host a huge datacenter for internationally-minded nerds

ye show me how to work around light speed limit...
Even the theoretical minimum for east coast - central europe - east coast would be somewhere around 45ms. twice that for west coast. + signals dont travel in a straight line, so those 45ms is not achieveable.

Even if, your own PC and the server need some time to respond, anyone not living near east coast will never get below 100 ms ping.

But people like ArtemRUS are teaching us how high ping gameplay looks like heh

In the past I calculated what would be the lowest theoretical ping that we can have between Paris and New-York and it is :

Distance: 5844 km or 3631 milles
Celerity/speed of the light in vacuum: 300000 km/s
Celerity/speed of the light in single-mode fiber: 200000 km/s

Travel duration: Distance / speed = 29.22 ms, so basically a ping of 30 ms which is pretty good.

Wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optical_fiber#Index_of_refraction
Quote
To put it another way, the signal will take 5 milliseconds to travel 1,000 kilometers in fiber.
Thus a phone call carried by fiber between Sydney and New York, a 16,000-kilometer distance, means that there is a minimum delay of 80 milliseconds (about 1/12 of a second) between when one caller speaks and the other hears. (The fiber in this case will probably travel a longer route, and there will be additional delays due to communication equipment switching and the process of encoding and decoding the voice onto the fiber).

Eu1 server is hosted in Germany at Frankfurt am Main giving a theoretical ping:

So it's in theory possible to play together without lag!

And for the fun :

Earth to the Moon is approx 384403 km (238857 miles) giving a ping of 1922 ms, no way to play online with Moon people!

I live in San Diego Ca. There was a time I got 135 ping on EU now its 185-195 ping.

  • Denver: 8125 km: 40.6 ms

I was mainly joking but it would be real cool if it became true! It would still be important to have regional servers but you could theoretically go everywhere you wanted, based on friends rather than latency.

And maybe in the future the boundaries will be pushed even more. Who's to say light speed is the maximum we can achieve? Pfff... casuals.

Well if you watch Black mirror you can also catch your friends' soul in your local network, perma < 1 ms ping!

fiber optics are capable of delivering that kind of ping as it stands right now. the real issue at hand is the shitty cable companies not wanting to invest billions of dollars to rebuild their infrastructure to add in modern fiber optics just for some greasy nerds wanting to play crpg and csgo across the world

You mean the people using said cable companies?

It will happen with time as old become broken and is replaced by new.

What does the NA servers being dead have anything to do with shields, if I may ask?

Maybe if we got enough shields to form a wall we could keep players from leaving NA1. visitors can't see pics , please register or login

What if we added deployable palisade walls in to the game so we could make ourselves forts to camp in while the ranged waste all their arrows. 10/10 nothing could possible go wrong. My ideas are the best, I know it, you know it, everyone knows it.

The exact same amount as being shot by ranged does.

Thus,   get a shield.

ping includes the travel back time also. So ping should be at least doubled from your calculations.

ping includes the travel back time also. So ping should be at least doubled from your calculations.

  • Paris: 478 km: 4.8 ms
  • London: 639 km: 6.4 ms

  • San Francisco: 9144 km: 91 ms
those numbers would be fantastic to have. anything below 100 is manageable. just make sure that when this is done, we keep ping for australian players the same. can't have kadeth getting uppity with non-atrocious ping

Dude, I'm still waiting for the patch where the auto-balancer factors in player ping. Another acceptable approach would be for the server to apply an extra 4 IF to any player with 200+ ping. I'll leave it in your capable hands.
