Title: So here's what San has been up to ever since he vanished from crpg
Post by: Jona on August 08, 2017, 11:20:57 pm
I tend to get a lot of Smash 4 videos in my youtube recommended section (since google's algorithms don't yet know I have no interest in it) and tend to ignore every single one, however this here video stuck out and I figured it'd be worth a watch.

According to San's profile (http://forum.melee.org/index.php?action=profile;u=6553), he went to Cornell, as mentioned here roughly 57 seconds in. (https://youtu.be/UftvOf2PzLI?t=57s) Also, San's longstanding personal text of "1/Sympathy = Divide By Zero" is a direct reference to the character Ike in smash bros, as one of his taunts is "you'll get no sympathy from me." And last but not least if you skip through the video you'll see the guy playing as Ike is black. Case closed, San left us crpgers to go play children's party games at a competitive level.  :D

Potentially. But then again, don't we all?

And hey, good of him to at least make money playing vidya. Not many of us can claim to have done the same.

I dont understand how they cant get the message, after typing "Super Smash Bros: Melee" five thousand times you'd think something would kick in and give you videos you actually care about

Also, can someone confirm if he lives in NY?

Lol, didn't think people would know some of the references.
Ironically, I quit smash to play Crpg back in ~2011-2012 era. I don't even play smash 4 all that much, that tournament was just 3 hours away from me and I haven't been to a large one in 2017.

The reason why I stopped playing Crpg is.. complicated. Back on February 6, 2015, there was an electrical fire in the attic of my house. Had to stay in a hotel for a month and then a temporary house for another few months while dealing with a hell contractor. I was still trying to help get new items into CRPG while applying for a job at the same time and had to put crpg on the back-burner to focus on other stuff. I just never picked it back up with the excuse that I was going to wait for Bannerlord since I *thought* that shit was coming out in less than a year. We all know what happened with that.

There was also nothing more that I wanted to change item-wise outside of 1h and shield internal balance (buffing crap items) and new items. I actually visited the forum a few times but forgot my password (had to log in through c-rpg.net that I did remember)

Eyyy, still must lurk around here, I guess. I remember that your apartment/house had the fire and then you disappeared. Can't blame you of course, given the circumstances, but it was poor timing to say the least. Left some of us wondering if you ever got situated again.

Also, MM me in melee, you won't.

I've only ever searched melee or ssbm really, it's all that is needed most of the time. Problem is that most channels upload content for both games, so youtube just hasn't learned yet to discriminate some of their videos from others. But funny stuff like this wouldn't happen if they fixed their algorithm, so *shrug.*

Is it just me or is the beat´em up community especially arrogant? Until now I´ve met different 4 people who own a fightingstick and are super into beat´em ups and all 4 have been outstanding self-centered shitbags. Does it give you some kind of mental disorder when you do a 40 hit combo with some plastic toy piano which a gear shift?

smash is awesome btw

They've simply all been brainwashed by le epic r/kappa maymays.  It isn't their fault, they're just too stupid to realize what's happened.

Smash Bros Brawl is the only fighting game I've played more than a few hours. Honestly whenever I hear people talking about more classical fighting games with combos that are difficult to pull of because the button presses are tightly timed, I just don't get the appeal. It feels like these games have deliberately shitty controls just to make "difficult" to play without making it more interesting. In Smash it's pretty easy to make your character execute the actions that you want, but it's very difficult to know what is the best thing to do and to react appropriately to your opponent. There's a reason I find Warband's combat to be so good: you're fighting your opponent, not the game.

Smash Bros Brawl is the only fighting game

a kid's party game =/= fighting game

They're extra competitive I guess. Honestly I feel FPS and stuff like Warband/cRPG communities aren't that far off. Any game that can give you a boost of adrenaline on occasion because you pulled off some Neo-you-are-the-one Matrix shit, really.

Even though I'm a fan of melee more than smash 4 it's definitely pretty cool to see someone that could kick ass on cRPG (with that annoying ass pick) is moving on to other games that arent dead. Just don't forget about us and come back to play every once in a while. The mods actually not THAT dead right now

True, the ashes still smoulder, but it could be so much more. Like your namesake, the mod could be reborn from it's ashes, for a last glorious, bright moment before Bannerlord, instead of going to a decaying, ignomious death. Spin to win indeed. Let the wheel turn on this final spoke, and the fields of cRPG shall yet again be full of retarded 2h spinning like ballerinas.

I'd kinda rank how competitive/hard (in terms of player skills) they are like this:

Starcraft, most fighting games > mobas > shooters > Warband > card games >>>>>>> kids' party games

in terms of community - fighting game community is definitely the saltiest and starcraft community is almost exclusively asian

As for starcraft and RTS games, having an insane RPM per minute and knowing strats is more important than gut instinct tactics. You can't compare the feeling you get from properly executing a strategy in an RTS game or MOBA to the visceral twitch adrenaline a reflex, twitch based game like beat em ups or FPS or Warband give.

I would agree that MOBAs are primarily autistic and 100% robotic unskilled Korean carpal tunnel simulators, but there are strategy games out there like the Wargame series that are a lot more nuanced. Definitely adrenaline inducing, at least for me at the level I play at. Back when Shogun 2 Total War was the  flavor of the year (that one time when Total War had a multiplayer worth a damn) I played that competitively and I would say I got more out of it than I ever did CSGO.

That's just me though I suppose. I'm able to find Grand Strategy games like Crusader Kings and Europa thrilling so take that as you will.

I've never cared for fighting games in the vein of Mortal Combat, never really been exposed to them. Nintendo is gay AF though, I played Mario stuff when I was like 4.

Back in the day though some of my NW friends and I got randomly matched with a 5-man of people I recognized as being from Remnant, funnily enough. One of the handful of 16-0's we ever accomplished. I don't know if they were fucking around or what.

What's so different about having a button dedicated to block rather than a direction?

A lot, makes the matches a lot less thinking and more mashy, MK pressure is literally just a blockstring that you spam out, having to block high, low and with direction you have to think about, and can apply crossups and different kind of attacks to break an opponents guard, also makes the gameplay more slow as you slow down your own momentum just to block. Aka it's a feature for beginners so they don't have to spend time learning different kinds of combos and crossups on pressure and makes them less frustrated, also why Nether realm games are for very casual players.

Crossups I can understand, but iirc you still have to block low/high in MK, it isn't like holding block makes you invincible to everything but grabs. I'd argue blocking always breaks up your momentum, regardless of whether or not you're backpedaling or not during it. Sure you lose some positional advantage, but ideally you never have to block if you're playing perfectly anyways. I admittedly only ever played MK casually, and for a fairly short amount of time, so there could be a lot more I'm missing simply because I don't remember the mechanics very well.

It's pretty widely spread that NRS fighters are the worst for competitive play. I only played for a bit many many years ago so I can't say why personally. From what I read animations and balance sucks and a lot of mechanics that make other fighters challenging are not present in MK, or are but are changed to something weird/easy. That's not to say that it's a bad game overall, just not very good for competitive.

This guy explains the animations quite well.

Smash is cool, actual fighty games are cool. I am good at them but don't play competitively. The majority of combos are just rolling the stick around or inverting direction while pressing 1 or 2 buttons. The characters I like are ones where I just kind of intuitively do the combos, trying to memorize and do them at specific times doesn't work as well for me. I also "main" characters based on whether I like the way they and their moves look. Why beat someone up if you can't look cool while doing it? My brother is more serious about the genre and has an arcade controller but we come out pretty even when we play.

I am not that surprised that San is Really Good at other video games. In crpg he was not only a skilled player but could get into the nitty gritty details if you had mechanics questions. I learned a lot from watching him play and from asking him stuff.
